The Register

Waters Upton.

Waters Upton Register.

WATERS UPTON, or Upton Parva, is a parish and village, five miles north from Wellington, situate on the river Tern and the road from Wellington to Hodnet. It is in the Hundred of South Bradford, the rural deanery of Edgmond, archdeaconry of Salop, and diocese of Lichfield. The area is about 730 acres, and the population in 1801 was 169, in 1841 it had risen to 228, whilst in 1901 it was 194.

In Edward the Confessor's time the manor was held by Gamel, and was worth 40s. 4d. per annum. At the Domesday Survey, Uptune, a manor of three hides, was held by Roger de Laci of the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, and Seuuard held it under him. In Henry I.'s reign, Pagan fitz John gave Uptune to Gilbert de Conedoure, whose descendants however did not hold the manor, for it presently passed to the Barony of Pantulf. Before the year 1200, Pantulf seems to have enfeoffed one Walter fitz John, who gave to this place its name of Walter's Upton, afterwards corrupted into Waters Upton. His son William fitz Walter de Uptone before 1223 gave to Haughmond Abbey a meadow in Uptone called Longeie. William's younger son Nicholas de Upton was also a benefactor to Haughmond Abbey, and to Shrewsbury Abbey to which he bequeathed his body and an annual rent-charge. After his death, Waters Upton passed to coparceners, who in 1292 were Richard de Upton (or de Tyrne) and Dionysia his wife, William de Upton (or de Tyrne) and Agnes his wife, and Adam de Upton and Emma his wife.

In 1285 Upton occurs as a member of the Barony of Wem, and William de Titley held it by the service of one knight's fee. He was Sheriff of Shropshire 1290-1295.

At the subsidy of 1327, six persons from Uptone were assessed, viz:- William de Garmeston, 2s. 9d., Adam Bercar, 18 1/2d., Robert Louote, 18d., John fitz Nicholas, 13d., Emma the relict of Roger, 21d., and Richard de Uptone, 21d.

Hardwicke's MSS. state that the manor, with the ancient manor-house, and land, was for some time part of the possessions of the Corbets of Moreton Corbet. Sir Andrew Corbet died possessed of it on 16th August, 1577. It then passed to his son Robert Corbet, who died in July, 1583, and on his death to his daughter and heiress Elizabeth, wife of Sir Henry Wallop, knight, of Farley and of Peynton in High Ercall. She died 15th November, 1624, and her son Robert Wallop, about the year 1656 sold this manor and part of the estates to Sir Richard Leveson, K.B., of Lilleshall. On his death, without issue, 2nd June, 1661, it passed to his niece Frances Leveson, the daughter and coheir of his brother John Leveson. She married Sir Thomas Gower, Bart., from whom is descended the Duke of Sutherland, the present lord of the manor of Waters Upton. The lands in Waters Upton belonging to the Levesons have long since been parted with, the small remaining portion being sold by the Duke in July, 1912, with the Lilleshall estates.

The hall was re-built early in the 18th century by Mr. John Wase, who by his will dated 6th April, 1715, left a croft in Sutton Lane, Coleham, in trust for the poor of the parish; he was buried in the chancel, 2nd May, 1715. From the Wase family the hall passed by marriage to Mr. John Dickin, who

married Elizabeth Wase in 1791. Miss Ann Dickin was living here in 1851. The last of the Dickins left three daughters, amongst whom the property was divided. The hall and land adjoining was purchased by Mr. Ernest John Fisk in 1905.

The Church was originally a chapelry of High Ercall, and was probably founded by the Lacies. About 1245 the advowson was given by Nicholas de Upton to Shrewsbury Abbey. In 1341 the chapelry was assessed at 16s. to the Ninth, but before this year had been separated from the mother church. Its value in 1534-5 was £4, less 2s. for procurations and 10 1/2d. for synodals, and it was in the Deanery of Newport. At the Religious Census of 1676, there were in Upton Parva 80 conformists above the age of 16, and no papists or nonconformists; the population would then probably be about 160.

No portion of the mediaeval chapel now remains. In 1741-2 a Brief was issued for building the Church at Upton Parva, and the Register records "The Church new built". Probably the nave only was then re-built, as John Wase, Councillor of Shrewsbury, mentions in his will of 1715 that he had built the chancel. In 1851 the Church is described as being "a small unpresuming structure, dedicated to St. Michael, consisting of nave and chancel, with a small belfry at the west end". It was taken down in 1864, when a new church was erected, from designs by Mr. G.E. Street, in the Decorated style. It consists of nave, chancel with south vestry, north porch, and western bell- cot, with a small spire. The money for this new church was raised by the Rev. John Halke, curate. A porch and organ chamber have lately been added to the church. There are two bells, dated 1701 and 1865, the earlier one being cast by a Wellington founder. The Church Goods return, dated 4th May, 1553, mentions "two small bells; a small chalice of silver with the paten". Roger Henson was parson, and Roberd Hylton and William Garson churchwardens. An earlier return dated 2nd June, 3 Edward VI., has this:- "Upton Parva, smalle bellis of accorde, oone chalys wythe a pattent of sylver". On the south wall are several small brasses, taken from tombstones on the floor of the old church; one is to the memory of rector William Jones, who died in 1691, aged 82 years. The Communion Plate, consisting of flagon, chalice, and paten, is all inscribed "Upton parva, Com. Salop, 1748". There is also a small paten, presented in 1907.

The Abbey of Shrewsbury presented to the rectory from about 1250 until its dissolution, after which the King presented until about 1864, when the advowson was purchased from the Lord Chancellor by Mr. Taylor, who in 1866 presented his nephew the Rev. John Bayley Davies. On Mr. Taylor's death the advowson came to Mr. Davies, and it is still vested in his trustees.

1718, April 19.- John Tourneor; inducted 7th May following. Son of John Tourneor, rector of Great Bolas 1662-93, by his wife Mary, daughter of Robert Mather of Balderton. Born 13th March, 1663-4, and baptized at Great Bolas 25th March, 1664. Of Hart Hall, Oxford. Rector of Great Bolas 29th Jan., 1693-4, until his death, 2nd July, 1741, buried there 3rd July, 1741.
1741, Sept. 1.- John Brooke, M.A., St. John's College, Cambridge; third Master of Shrewsbury School, 1740-54, and second Master 1754-63. He died 29th Nov., 1763, aged 48, and was buried 2nd December, at St. Mary's, Shrewsbury, where there is a brass to his memory. During his incumbency the church was re-built, and the communion plate presented.
1764, Feb. 22.- Thomas Hatton, B.A., inducted 21st April following; died 18th May, 1807, aged 72, and buried 22nd May at Waters Upton, where is a brass to his memory, and a hatchment with the arms of the family of the Earls of Winchilsea.

1866, Jan. 16.- John Bayley Davies, M.A., St. John's College, Cambridge, patron and rector; at Shrewsbury School, 1855-9; died 23rd Nov., 1905, aged 65, and buried at Waters Upton, where there is a monument in the churchyard and a brass in the chancel to his memory.
1906, March 22.- Samuel Hobson, M.A., and Scholar of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge; vicar of Uppington 1880-1902, and Diocesan Inspector 1888-1902. The present rector of Waters Upton. During his incumbency a new porch and organ chamber have been added to the church.

vi. WATERS UPTON REGISTERS.

The Parish Register Abstract has this notice of the Registers:- "Upton Parva or Waters Upton R. Nos. I., II. Registers (parchment) 1563-1793. No. III. 1794-1812. See Ercall Magna". And under Ercall Magna are the words "including Bur. from Rodington and Waters Upton". This account is both incomplete and inaccurate.

Volume I. is a book of 31 parchment leaves, without a cover. Several leaves have been cut out. It contains Baptisms 1547-1718; Weddings, one in 1547, thence 1566-1612, on two leaves at the end of the book with a few others interspersed; Burials 1711-1718 on the last leaf, and other entries in 1662, 1679, 1686, and 1693-1709. The first page is largely illegible. The entries from the commencement to 1598 were "newly coppied by Roger Lowe, parson there"; each page to 1608 is signed "per me Rogerum Lowe, Rect.", and the Register is well written up to that year. Later on some of the writing is in a clerk's hand. This volume needs careful binding.

It should be noted that many of the burials from Waters Upton took place at High Ercall. At end of of Volume II. of the High Ercall Registers is a "Registrum Rodintonia et Waters-Upton per se separatum et inchoatum Undecimo Die Octobris Anno Christi 1679", which contains entries of sixteen burials from Waters Upton between 1679 and 1692. Other burials took place at Great Bolas.

Volume II. is a book of 24 parchment leaves, 10 1/4 inches by 6 1/4 inches, in a parchment cover, and contains Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials from 1718 to 1733. Outside is written: "The Register of Waters Upton, beginning in May, 1718". Inside the first cover is the Institution of John Tourneor in 1718, and on the last cover that of Thomas Hatton, in 1764. The entries in John Tourneor's handwriting are well written, and he heads each year from 1725 to 1740, "Anno Aerae Xtianae, 1725", &c. John Brooke's writing is also very good, 1741 to 1764. Thomas Hatton baptized many children at home and enters their reception into the church. The volume is in good condition, and fairly legible throughout.

Volume III. is a book of 15 parchment leaves, 13 inches by 8 inches, in a leather cover. It contains Baptisms from 1794 to 1816 at one end, outside being written "Xg Register of Waters Upton"; and Burials from 1793 to 1815 at the other end, "Burial Register of Waters-Upton" being written on the cover. There is also one Wedding in 1815. The volume is in good condition and legible, but much of it is written by an illiterate clerk.

Volume IV. contains 60 entries of Marriages from 1755 to 1811. It is the usual printed paper book, without covers, and in bad condition.

There is an interesting paper by the Hon. and Rev. G.H.F. Vane, "On the Parish Registers of Waters Upton", printed in the Shropshire Archaeological Society's Transactions for 1897.

The principal families named in the Register are those of Wase, Dickin, Littlehales, and Geary. John Wase, esq., was buried in 1715, and his descendants are usually styled "gent." or "Mr." The Gearys are ancestors of Admiral Sir Francis Geary, created a Baronet, and of his descendants the Gearys of Oxon Hoath, Kent. In 1727 the marriage of Mr. Vernon Yonge of Charnes occurs, in 1751 the marriage of Mr. Edmund Littlehales with Margaret Wingfield, and in 1752 that of Mr. Folliott Sandford with Mary Littlehales. In 1785 occurs the burial of Octavius Caesar Augustus Hitchcock, who was murdered at the early age of 22. In 1787 and 1790 two daughters of Captain Rene Neve L'Issoir, a French refugee, were baptized.
