The Register of
Sheinton.

Sheinton Registers.

The Parish Register Abstract, published in 1834 contains the following account of the Registers:- "Sheinton R. Nos. I, II. Bap. Bur. 1711- 1812. No. III. Marr. 1754-1812. No Marriage Register prior to 1754 can be found". This is not strictly correct, as the first Register contains frequent entries of marriages from 1711 to 1754.

The earliest Register is a parchment book of seventeen leaves, and is in good condition. The entries are well written, and are in English. It extends from 1711 to 1779, but the marriages only to 1754. The entries from 1773 to 1777 are in the parish clerk's writing, and the meaning is difficult to make out. The most important entries are those relating to the families of Lacon of West Coppice, Williams, and Leighton. The names of Churchwardens are recorded to 1724. In the following abstract the first year's entries are given in full.

The second volume extends from 1780 to 1812. It is a parchment book of eighteen leaves, well written, and in excellent condition. It contains no important entries. On the cover the word "Sheinton" is written.

The third volume is a paper book, following the ordinary printed form, and contains entries of fifty-seven marriages from 1754 to 1812. It is in a parchment cover, and is in good condition. Members of the Harnage family sometimes sign as witnesses. On the fly-leaf is written, "William Prosser, Curate of Shienton. John Hewlett".

Some extracts from an earlier Register, beginning in 1658, are preserved in George Morris's manuscript Shropshire Registers, and are here printed. They contain some important entries relating to the Harnage family. It is not known how or when this Register was lost, but it was missing in 1831.

Sheinton is in the diocese of Lichfield, and rural deanery and hundred of Condover. The Church is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Paul, and consists of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch, and a wooden bell turret. In the chancel is a small stone recumbent figure, presumably of a female, which was discovered at the restoration of the Church by the Rev. George Burd, rector, in 1854. The Schools were built by the Rev. Henry Bagnall, rector. The Trustees of the late John Anstice, esq., are patrons of the rectory. The population in 1821 was 182; in 1881 it had fallen to 107. The area is 946 acres. Sheinton lies to miles south-east from Shrewsbury.

In Domesday it is called Schentune or Scentune, and was held by Ralph de Mortemer. The Church was originally subject to the Church of Cound.
