Frodesley Registers.
FRODESLEY is a parish and village, eight miles south-east from Shrewsbury, in the diocese of Lichfield, rural-deanery of Condover, and hundred of Condover. The area is 2,597 acres.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Frodesley Registers:-" Frodesley R. No. I (Parchment) Bap. 1547-1812; Bur. 1780-1812; Marr. 1547-1753. No. II. (Parchment) Marr. 1754-1805. No. III. Marr. 1807-1812. The Churchyard was not consecrated until 1780".
The earliest Register Book is a small volume, containing fifty-nine parchment leaves, ten inches by five inches, legibly written, in beautiful condition, and very well kept. Inside the cover is fastened the will of Robert de Longedon, rector from 1358 to 1361.
The two Marriage Registers are the ordinary printed form.
The most important entries in the volume are those relating to the family of Scriven, and these of the children of Sir Richard Corbett, who seems to have lived at Frodesley, while the present Longnor Hall was in process of building.
The Church of Frodesley was originally one of the Chapels of Condover, and a trace of this dependence is shewn by the fact that till comparatively modern times all funerals from Frodesley were taken to Condover. There was a Church here in 1272, and the Taxation of 1291, valued it at 42 per annum. In 1341, it was called a Chapel. It was possibly founded by one of the family of Hunald, who, from the beginning of the thirteenth century held the manor under the Fitz-Alans. The over-lordship passed by marriage to the Burnels at the close of that century, but the Hunalds continued to be lords of the manor till the beginning of the fifteenth, when Johanna, daughter of John Hunald, took the estate to her husband, John Scriven. The Scrivens lived in a fine old stone house near the Church, which was pulled down in 1880, and the present Hall farm erected on its site. This old house had been built by Edward Scriven in 1594; and there still exists a portion of a fine house of about the same date, known as Frodesley Lodge, which possesses traces of past importance in what has been an avenue of trees, and a number of old Spanish chestnuts.
The Scrivens were at Frodesley till 1683, when Richard Scriven, whose father Sir Thomas, greatly distinguished himself on the Royalist side in the Civil War, left a daughter as his sole heiress, who married Roger Whitley, of Peover, co. Chester. Early in the eighteenth century the advowson of the Church and the lordship of the manor, were purchased by Samuel Edwardes, whose descendants retained them till

1784, when Elizabeth, only child of Godolphin Edwardes, sold the Manor and Estate of Frodesley to Sir Edward Smythe of Acton Burnell. The advowson passed later to the Gleadowe family, and has recently passed into the hands of Mr. T.G. Northam.
The parish ssems originally to have been mainly composed of small independent holdings. In 1327 the Lay Subsidy Roll gives a list of thirteen tenants, seven of whom were evidently well-to-do, and none really poor, while Acton Burnel had only seven names on the whole assessment. Probably these holdings were originally clearings in the Long Forest, and the control of the lord of the manor over them was not much more than nominal. The number of yeomen mentioned in the register show that many of these little estates retained their independence till comparatively modern times.
In the religious census of 1676, Frodesley had 120 "Conformists" over the age of sixteen, and no Nonconformists or Roman Catholics. The population in 1881 was 235, and in 1891, 179, which shows a considerable decrease in the last twenty years, and several cottages have been pulled down or gone to ruin within recent times.

In the Public Record Office is the following list of Church goods of Frodesley in 1552: "The indenture of all the goods of the churche, or chapel wth cure of frodesley presented by the p'sone Sr George Longmer, & the churche wardens, Laurence Sherer, Thomas Dodd, and Homfray Burnell & Rafe Madocks paryshyonars - fyrst a chalyce of sylver wt p'er paten, ij bells, ij peyre of vestments, j of erule whyte & Reds, & j of Whyte fustyan, & a crosse of brasse. Wrytten the xiij day of August the sixt yeare of the Reygne off kyng Edward the sixt by the grace of god of England, France & Ireland kynge.

The Church, dedicated to St. Mark, is a small building, rebuilt in 1809, with a north aisle added in 1859. The presence of an old font in the Rectory garden points to the existence of a Norman church, of which history makes no mention.
A plot of land called the Butts was left by Godophin Edwards in the last century, to be administered by the rector and churchwardens for the good of the poor of the parish.
The present transcript was made by Miss G. Walker, with the assistance of the Rev. F.J. Walker, the then Rector, and the proofs, as they passed through the press, were collated with the original registers partly by Miss Auden, and partly by the Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher. They are now printed by permission of the Rev. A.H. Britton, the present Rector.

Immediately upon my induction I was called upon by the Vicar of Condover
(Rev. Forester Leighton) for a Mortuary of 10 shillings, as due to the
Vicar of Condover, from every inhabitant dying in Frodesley possessed of
property to the value of 40£. I refused to pay the Mortuary on account of
my father, for which it was claimed, as did also Mr. Jones for his father,
and Mrs. Powell, of the Lane, for her husband. In a short time I received
a letter from the Rev. F. Leighton, the then Vicar, confessing his error
in demanding a Mortuary, and acknowledging it was not due.
