The Register
of
Edstaston.

Edstaston Register.

Edstaston was taken out of Wem, and formed into a separate parish, in 1850. It includes the hamlets of Edstaston and Cotton, and comprises an area of 3,721 acres. The population in 1901 was 740.

The Parish Register Abstract gives this information about the Register:

EDSTANTON C. One Book (imperfectly kept), Bap., Bur., Mar., 1712-1812." The earlier entries, and some concurrent with these years, will be found in the Wem Registers.

The Church of St. Mary consists of nave, chancel, and south porch, and a western bell-gable. It dates from the Norman period; and there are three Norman doorways, also Norman sedilia and aumbry. In 1723, it was partly rebuilt, and in 1882-3 completely restored.

The chapels of Edstaston and Newtown being very often served from Wem, and sometimes from other parishes, the following list of the clergy is very incomplete. It will be observed that the curates of Wem were also often appointed to these chapels or derived from them. The following were some of those who had charge of the ancient and very interesting chapel of Edstaston:-

The best known of the Curates of Edstaston was Samuel Garbet, the historian of Wem, who was 43 years minister here, and was buried at Edstaston 10th August, 1756.

The Register was transcribed by the Rev. Francis Talbot Purcell, and the proofs as they passed through the press were collated by him with the original Register, and they are now printed with his kind permission.
