Note for the Reader.
With the present volume is completed the eighth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of Lichfield. It consists of the Registers of Wrockwardine and Moreton Say.
As has been the plan adopted by the Council throughout, the Registers are not printed verbatim et literatim, but in abstract form, all mere verbiage being omitted, though every fact is recorded. The following abbreviations have been adopted:-
b.- bachelor. | gent.- gentleman. |
bap.- baptised. | lic.- license. |
chr.- christened. | mar.- married. |
ch. w.- churchwardens. | p. (or par.)- parish. |
clk.- clerk. | s.- son. |
co.- county. | sp.- spinster. |
d.- daughter. | w.- wife. |
dioc.- diocese. | wid.- widow. |
esq.- esquire. | widr.- widower. |
wit.- witnesses. |
A capital letter after "of" or "p." denotes the parish whose particular Register is being printed; thus "of W." = "of Wrockwardine".
Thanks are due to the incumbents of the parishes for leave to print the Registers, and for facilities afforded in their transcription. Also to Mr. W.A. Cecil Sandford-Thompson and Mr. T.R. Horton, who transcribed the Registers; to Miss Auden and others for collating; to Mr. H.H. France-Hayhurst and Lady Mary Herbert for pecuniary assistance in printing; and to Lady Magdalen Herbert, Miss Auden, and others, for much help in compiling the valuable historical introductions.
