Abdon Registers.
ABDON
ABDON is a parish of 2,189 acres, including Earnstrey, in the Diocese of Hereford, the Rural Deanery of Ludlow, and the Hundred of Munslow. It lies on the western slopes of the Brown Clee, 10 miles from Ludlow and 12 miles from Bridgnorth. The usual form of the name in early times was Abbeton (variously spelt), denoting the farm or enclosure of a certain Abba (or Aba) of long ago.
Archdeacon Corbett, writing in 1793, says: "Abdon is one township. It contains 30 houses, 31 families, and 153 persons. Some houses have been taken down, and several seem to have fallen down, in this parish. Of the 31 families, one is a kind of gentleman or agent. There are 7 farmers, 1 weaver, 13 miners, 7 common labourers, one widow and one spinster. This parish, however, is populous still; though the houses have decreased, they are a large number for the district ... There are mines of coal, lime, and ironstone in this parish. There is no alehouse. The miners get 1s. a day for working half the day, and in harvest time often earn another 1s. Some of them keep pigs. No roads can be worse than the horse-roads in this and the neighbouring parishes." In 1851 the population was 155 with 36 houses; in 1921 it was 145. The intervening returns show but little fluctuation.
At the time of Domesday (1086) Abdon was held under Earl Roger by Rainald the Sheriff, whose undertenant was Azo. Uluuin had held it in Saxon times. It was a manor of three hides, where there was one plough team and three serfs, and one French-born man, two villeins, one radman and two bordars with one plough-team, and there might be three teams more. In K. Edward's time it was worth 20s., and at the time of the Survey 12s.
Azo gave a virgate of land here to the Monks of Shrewsbury Abbey, who apparently did not retain it, though they remained patrons of the Rectory till the Dissolution.
Rainald's over-lordship passed to the Fitzalans, under whom the manor was held by Le Strange, whose undertenants were the family of Ledwyche for at least a hundred years. Towards the close of the 13th century it had become part of the great possessions of Bishop Burnel, and a member of the Barony of Holgate. The nephew and heir of the Bishop, Sir Philip Burnel, survived his uncle little over a year, and died in 1294, leaving a son - Edward, who died without issue in 1315, and a daughter Maud.
Maud Burnel was twice married, - first, to Sir John Lovel; and secondly to Sir John de Handlo. She joined with her second husband in settling her estates on her male issue by him, to the exclusion of her son by her first husband; and accordingly the Burnel inheritance passed to Nicholas de Handlo, who assumed the name of Burnel, and died in 1382, seised of the manor of Abdon, held under the Earl of Arundel. He was succeeded by his son Sir Hugh Burnel, Baron of Holgate, whose son Edward died before his father, leaving three daughters his coheirs. In 1417 Sir Hugh settled Holgate and many other manors (including Abdon) on Katherine, one of these daughters, who was contracted in marriage to John Talbot, but afterwards married Sir John Radcliff, who possessed these estates in right of his wife. It was presumably on her death that the Burnel inheritance passed to William Lovel, Baron Lovel of Titchmarsh, as heir male of Maud Burnel's first husband. He died seised of
iv. ABDON REGISTERS.
Abdon in 1454. His son John was father of Francis, Lord Lovel, who in the reign of Henry VII forfeited his estates, which were granted by the King to his uncle Jaspar, Duke of Bedford, who died without issue in 1497. In 1513-14 Henry VIII. granted Abdon, with Holgate, etc., to Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, whose son Thomas, Duke of Norfolk, conveyed them to Sir John Dudley, whose brother Jerome Dudley was patron of Abdon in 1551. In 1549 Holgate, with Clee St. Margaret, Rushbury, and Stanton Long, was granted to the Bishop of Worcester, under whom these estates were held on lease by Henry Cresset, who also appears as lord of Abdon in 1556. Henry Cresset by his will (1562) devised the manor of Abdon to his nephew Richard Cresset of Upton, who presented to the Rectory in 1580. [1]
Under Burnel Abdon was held by William Burley of Broncroft, who died in 1459, leaving two daughters his coheirs, - Elizabeth, wife of Sir Thomas Trussell, and Joan, wife of Sir Thomas Lytelton, - who inherited his estate at Abdon in two moieties. Joan survived her husband till 1502, when she died seised of lands in Abdon, her heir being her son William Lytelton of Frankley, whose son John died seised of these lands in 1532.
Elizabeth, the other daughter, was mother of Sir William Trussell, whose son Edward died in 1499, seised of a moiety of lands in Abdon, held of " the heirs of Hugh Burnel " by fealty, a rent of 2s. and 1lb. of pepper. His widow Margaret held in dower a third part of this moiety of " a messuage called Abdon " and 412 acres of land there. His daughter and heir Elizabeth married John Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford, whose son John in 1552 sold his property in Abdon to John Stringfellow of London, who appears to have sold it to Adam Lutley of Broncroft, who probably acquired the Lytelton moiety also.
Adam Lutley, who was buried at Tugford in 1590, was seised of a messuage and lands in Abdon, held of " the lord of Abdon," who is not named (I.p.m.). In his will Adam Lutley leaves his " manor " of Abdon to his eldest son John, " to enter at once, and to have the oxen, kine, etc., there."
Shortly afterwards Humphrey Briggs of Earnstrey was lord of the manor of Abdon. He was Sheriff in 1605, and by his marriage with Anne, daughter of Robert Moreton, became possessed of the Haughton estate near Shifnal. He died in 1625, seised of the manor of Abdon, held by service not known (I.p.m.). His son Moreton Briggs was created Baronet in 1641, and was father of Sir Humphrey Briggs, who was Sheriff in 1666. On the death of Sir Hugh Briggs in 1747, the Baronetcy expired, and his sisters became his coheirs. Of these, Elizabeth married Leigh Brooke, whose grandson the Rev. John Brooke of Shifnal inherited the Haughton and Abdon estates, and devised them to his nephew George Townshend. But in 1800, by Act of Parliament, a more regular partition of the Briggs estates was made, by which Abdon was assigned to Viscount Fitzwilliam, descended from Barbara, eldest sister of Sir Hugh Briggs, and wife of Bishop Chandler of Durham.
Lord Fitzwilliam bequeathed this property to George Augustus, Earl of Pembroke, with remainder to the Earl's second son, the Hon. Sydney Herbert, who was lord of the manor in 1851. His sons succeeded to the Earldom. In 1872 the manor (but not the advowson) was purchased by William Bradley, who died in 1905. His family still own the manor of Abdon. Thomas Bradley married at Abdon in 1780 Jemima, daughter of Robert Briggs, who lived at Earnstrey Park and was son of Moreton Briggs of Rushbury, where he was baptized in 1725. " Mr. Robert Briggs " was buried at Abdon in aro, aged 85. His tomb is in the Churchyard.
[1] It seems probable that Sir John Dudley, or his brother Jerome, conveyed the manor to Cresset, and Cresset to Briggs; but William Heath of Grimley had some interest here, at any rate in the Advowson.
ABDON REGISTERS. v.
In 1625 William Fewtrell of Wrickton died seised of lands in Abdon called Bromley, held of the manor of Abdon, his heirs being his great nephew William Jenckes, whose daughter Margaret married Anthony Kinnersley. Thomas Kinnersley of Leighton, a descendant of Anthony, held property in Abdon in 1822.
In the Subsidy Roll of 1327 eleven inhabitants were assessed for Abbetone, of whom John de Abbeton, Simon de Baggesoure (Badger) and Henry de Bradeleg were the most important.
ABDON BURF. This earthwork, which occupies the summit of the Brown Clee, has unfortunately been almost quarried away in recent years. It was of oval shape, measuring 1,317 feet from North to South, and 660 feet from East to West. The vallum was about 65 feet wide at its base, and in places some 8 feet at its crest. It stood nearly 12 feet above the level of the interior of the enclosure, and externally varies with the configuration of the hill. Hartshorne considered that Abdon Burl was intended not as a defensive work but for religious purposes. H. H. Lines also believed that a rude temple once existed in the enclosure, and thought he could see traces of it in a large collection of stones. All this however must be regarded as very uncertain, and the problem of Abdon Burf may now be never fully solved. It seems probable that Abdon Burf was a tribal dwelling-place, such as are found on these high elevations, and that Nordy Bank was an off-shoot; and further that the latter was afterwards occupied and reconstructed by the Romans for the purpose of subduing Abdon Burf.
EARNSTREY, until 1884, was part of Diddlebury parish. It was held in 1383 by Ankaret, Baroness Strange of Blackmere, as aunt and heir of Elizabeth, Baroness Strange. She married first Richard Talbot, Lord Furnival (ob. 1396), and secondly Sir Thomas Nevin. She died in 1407, seised of the Haye and Chase of Ernestre and of the Clee (Lesclives), her heir being her son Gilbert Talbot, who was eventually succeeded by his brother John, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury.
In 1481 Bishop Mylling granted a license to Edward Cleobury and Elizabeth his wife of Diddlebury, to have an Oratory in their house within Ernystre Park.
Earnstrey remained with the Talbots till George, the 6th Earl, sold it to Oliver Briggs, father of Humphrey Briggs (ob. 1625) above- mentioned. Oliver Briggs died in 1595, seised of the manor of Ernestree Park and of a messuage and 11,000 acres (much of it wood and moor) in Earnstree and Brown Clee, also View of Frankpledge and free chase there, held of the Crown. These lands he had previously (1586) settled on his son Humphrey and Anne his wife.
Earnstrey was later the property of the Myttons of Cleobury North, and passed to Lord Boyne. It has recently been sold.
THE CHURCH OF ST. MARGARET.
There was a church here as early as 1138, but no part of the existing fabric is of this date, unless perhaps a portion of the walls of the nave, which are thicker than those of the chancel. A Brief, issued in 1737, for repairing the Church (the sum mentioned being £1,120) is doubtless responsible for many features of the present building. Considerable alterations were made in 1860, when the gallery at the W. end (which had been reconstructed in 1831) was taken down and the nave extended, the bell-gable re-built, and several windows inserted. The only original window is on the S. side of the chancel, a good example of the Decorated period. The E. window was placed there by the Rev. W. S. Dear. Two other windows have recently been added, one at the W. end of the N. wall in 1909, the other opposite in the S. wall in 1910. The Font is early English.

The Inventory of Church Goods, dated May 15th, 7 Ed. VI., gives the following return by Richard Rushton, parson, Thomas Barber and Humphry Weye, churchwardens,- " to bellys a chalys of selver wt the Paten thereto belonging now in the p'yche and Stepull." Another return gives " too bell of accord and ix bells upon oon whele and oon chalyce of sylver w'th a patent."
There were 3 bells in 1740, and until the alterations of 1860. The present pair in the double-arched gable-cot are by J. Warner & Sons of London, and dated 1859 and 1860.
The Communion Plate is modern, the gift of Mr. Styrrop, a pupil of the Rev. W. S. Dear.

Twenty-one acres of Glebe were sold in 1922. The present Rectory, no longer occupied as such since the Benefice was united with that of Clee St. Margaret in 1928, was re-built (or greatly improved) by Lord Pembroke, the patron, about 1825.
THE SCHOOL was built in 1848, when the foundation-stone was laid by the Rev. W. S. Dear, Rector.
THE REGISTERS.
The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 gives the following account of the Abdon Registers:-" Abdon R. No. I Register (parchment) 1554-1749, defective until 1650. Nos. II, III, 1750-1812. No. IV, 1754-1812."
ABDON REGISTERS. vii.
The earliest Register seems to extend from about 1560 to 1749. It consists of 64 parchment leaves, 12¼ in. by 6½in., some of which are blank, or written on one side only. There is no separate cover, the parchment leaves which form the cover being filled with entries. The upper portion of the first leaf (or cover) is torn off, and the remaining portion is mostly faded and illegible, the entries on it being apparently of the years 1560 to 1563 and 1567. The second leaf begins with the year 1583. There are gaps from 1563 to 1583, 1586 to 1614, and 1641 to 1649. The Register is in bad condition; it has been mutilated in places, pieces being cut or torn off. The Churchwardens usually sign at the end of each year, and the Rectors also in the latter part of the volume.
Volume II, which extends from 1749 to 1789, consists of 11 parchment leaves, 12in. by 7½in., in a parchment cover. The entries for 1789 are on the fly-leaf. It is very neatly written from 1749 to 1780, each page being signed by " John Collier, rector." The Churchwardens' names were given from 1749 to 1752, but have since been erased.
Volume III contains entries of baptisms and burials from 1789 to 1812, and consists of 7 parchment leaves, 12in. by 7½in., in a parchment cover. Over the entries for 1790 have been pasted similar entries written on slips of parchment, possibly cut from the returns made for the Bishop.
Volume IV, which contains entries of 58 marriages and a few banns, is a paper book in a parchment cover, and extends from 1754 to 1812. It is the usual printed form of marriage register.
Entries of marriages up to 1838, from a later volume (1813-1850), have been included in the printed register. The remaining volumes are still in use.
The principal family mentioned in the Registers is that of Briggs of Earnstrey. Other families to which the prefix " Mr." or " Mrs." is occasionally given are:- Blakeway, Bowdler, Bray, Carpenter, Rushbury, and Tasker. The entries relating to Baldwin, Dewce, Millichap, and Stedman are also of interest.
