Note for the Reader.
The present is the sixth volume of the Registers of the Diocese of St. Asaph which has been completed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society. It contains the fourth, fifth, and sixth volumes of the voluminous Registers of Oswestry.
In this volume the Registers are not printed verbatim et literatim, but in abstract form, all mere verbiage being omitted, though every fact is recorded, and all occurrences, remarkable events, &c., given in the Registers are printed in full. The following abbreviations have been adopted:-
aff. - affidavit. gent. - gentleman.
b. - bachelor (or born). lic. - license.
bap. - baptized. mar. - married.
bas. - bastard. p. - parish.
bur. - buried. P. (or Pr.) - pauper.
chr. - christened. s. - son.
ch. w. - churchwardens. sp. - spinster.
clk. - clerk. w. - wife.
co. - county. wid. - widow.
d. - daughter. widr. - widower.
dioc. - diocese. wit. - witnesses.
esq. - esquire.
For the transcript of the present Volume our thanks are due to Miss Rachel Leighton, who has also collated the transcript with the original Registers, and has passed the proofs through the press.
In this Volume there is a noticeable absence of "ap" names, so frequent in the earlier Volumes, and the names will he found indexed under the surnames throughout, save in the case of a few Welsh names, where they are indexed under the first Christian name.
Thanks are due to the late and present Vicars of Oswestry for leave to print the Register, and for facilities afforded in transcription and collation.
May, 1914.
