Note for the Reader.

The present is the second volume of the Registers of the Diocese of St. Asaph which has been completed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society. It consists of the Registers of Whittington and Halston.

In this volume, as has been the plan adopted by the Council throughout, the Registers are not printed verbatim et literatim, but in abstract form, all mere verbiage being omitted, though every fact is recorded, and all occurrences, remarkable events, terriers, &c., given in the Registers are printed in full. The following abbreviations have been adopted:-

aff. - affidavit gent. - gentleman.
b. - bachelor (or born). lic. - license.
bap. - baptized. mar. - married.
bd. - bastard. p. (or par.) parish.
bur. - buried. P. (or Pr.) pauper.
chr. - christened. a. - son.
ch. w. - churchwardens. sp. - spinster.
clk. - clerk. w. - wife.
co. - county. wid. - widow.
d. - daughter. widr. - widower.
dioc. - diocese. wit. - witnesses.
esq. - esquire.

A capital letter after "of" or "p." denotes the parish whose particular Register is being printed; thus "of W."=" of Whittington," and "p. H." ="parish of Halston."

Thanks are due to the Rev. E. Pell Edmonds for leave to print the Registers, and for facilities afforded in their transcription and collation. Also to Miss Leighton for transcribing and collating, and to Mr. R. Ll. Kenyon for the valuable historical introduction. The Register of Whittington is particularly interesting owing to the large number of entries it contains on all sorts of subjects. Mr. Kenyon has called attention to the more important of these on pp. vi. to viii. of his Introduction.

In indexing the Welsh names, the method adopted in the Oswestry Index has not been employed, but the name occurring after the first "ap" has been taken as the surname.
