Uppington.
Uppington Registers.
UPPINGTON is a Parish 7 1/2 miles east from Shrewsbury, and 4 miles south-west from Wellington, in the diocese of Lichfield, rural deanery of Wrockwardine, and hundred of South Bradford. Its area is 706 acres, and the population in 1881 was 101. Lord Barnard is lord of the manor and patron of the vicarage, and sole landowner.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Uppington Registers:- "Uppington P.C. No. I Bap. Bur. 1650-1783, Marr. 1650-1753. No. II. Bap. 1782-1812, Bur., 1783-1812. No. III. Marr. 1754-1812". This statement is accurate, except that in the second volume the Baptisms commence in 1784.
The first Register, which extends from 1650 to 1783, consists of nineteen parchment leaves, 13 inches by 6 1/2 inches, bound in a leather cover with clasps. One leaf at the end has been cut out, but it evidently contained no entries, as the last eight entries, which follow consecutively, are written on the fly-leaf. It is well written throughout. From 1742 to 1749 the Incumbent, Rev. Edward Tipton, omitted to register, but thirteen entries of these years were entered in 1754 by his successor, John Douglas.
The second Register is one of Lowndes' printed Register Books, issued in 1783, in conformity with the Stamp Duty Act of 23 George III. It is on paper, in a leather cover, labelled "Births and Burials" and there is space for ten entries on each page. The first half of the volume contains Births and Christenings from 1784 to 1812. The latter half contains Burials from 1783 to 1812. But only nine pages of Births and Christenings and eight pages of Burials have been used. The Rev. David Dewar omitted to register from 1804 to 1807, but his successor entered the omissions from a paper given him by the parish clerk.
The third Register is the usual printed form of marriage register. It is on paper, in a parchment cover, and contains entries from 1754 to 1812, but only 33 marriages and 1 additional Banns are entered between those years.
The chief families named in the Registers are those of Staniar and Boycott, who are termed "Mr.", "gent.", or "esq.". That of Allestree is also styled "gent.", whilst the Pembertons and Wards were also families of importance.
UPPINGTON REGISTERS. iii
The Incumbents named in the Registers are as follows:-
1674. Thomas Markham, M.A.
1716-1738. Francis Latouche, lit.; died 23 and buried 25 Feb. 1737-8.
1738-1749. Edward Tipton, B.A.; died 3 and buried 4 August, 1749, at Leighton.
1749. John Douglas, D.D., Balliol College, Oxford, F.R.S. and

Marquis of Bath. Became Vicar of Uppington and of
Eaton Constantine in 1749, of High Ercall in 1750, and
of Kenley in 1758. In 1787 he was consecrated Bishop
of Carlisle, and in 1791 was translated to Salisbury.
He was born in Fifeshire 14 July, 1721, and died at
Windsor Castle, 18 May, 1807, and was buried 25th at
St. George's Chapel, Windsor. (See D.N.B., xv., 337-8;
Gent. Mag., 1807, pp. 475 and 583; Annual Register,
1807, 330-334, for a fuller account of this
distinguished prelate.)
1768. John Greaves, BA., qu. of Christ Church, Oxford.
1800-1806. David Dewar.
1807-1838. John Geary, qu. M.A., Christ Church, Oxford; buried 22 March, 1838.

1840-1880. John Meredith, MA., Christ Church, Oxford.
1880. Samuel Hobson, M.A., Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge; Diocesan Inspector of Schools.
The Curates named in the Registers are:-
1748-1753. Gronow Owen, of Jesus College, Cambridge, styled
the "premier poet of Wales"; also Master of Donnington
School. Born at Llanfair, 1723, died about 1769.
(See D.N.B., xlii, 411-412; and Shropshire Archeological
Transactions, 2nd series, ix, 223.)
1754-1767. George Greaves.
1770-1803. James Cope.
1823. T. Shiel.
1826. G.H. De Stark.
1828. William Jones.
1834-1838. James Purvis.
Besides the bishop and poet, Uppington had a distinguished native in Dr. Richard Allestree, who was born here in 1619, and became Chaplain to Charles II., Canon of Christ Church, Regius Professor of Divinity, and Provost of Eton, where he died 28 January, 1680-1.
The old Church of the Holy Trinity consisted of nave with south porch, chancel, and small turret containing two bells, and was in the Norman style, with some Perpendicular and later Tudor additions. In pre-Reformation times, the Church was usually served by one of the
iv UPPINGTON REGISTERS.
portioners of Wroxeter, though always ecclesiastically distinct. In later times, the Incumbent was usually also Master of the Donnington Free Grammar School, which was founded in 1627 by Thomas Alcock, for the instruction of the youth of Wroxeter and Uppington. In the Church and Churchyard are many monuments to the Staniar and Boycott families. The Church was restored in 1885, and a new tower and organ chamber built, at the cost of the Duke of Cleveland; the Norman walls and the old windows were, however, carefully preserved.
Some Roman remains have been found in Uppington, and near it is a Roman encampment called "The Moat". The manor at Domesday was held by Gerard de Tornai, from whom it passed to Hamo de Peveril. It was subsequently held by the Mussuns, Burnells, the Lords Lovell, Duke of Norfolk, Earls of Bradford, and Dukes of Cleveland.
Some account of "Uppington Church", by the late Rev. W.A. Leighton, will be found in the Shropshire Archeological Transactions, vol. v, pp. 89-99.
The Registers were transcribed by Mr. T.R. Horton, and were since collated by the Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher, F.S.A., who has also passed the proofs through the press. They are printed by the kind permission of the Rev. Samuel Hobson, M.A., the present Incumbent of Uppington.
