The Register of
Uffington.

Uffington Registers.

UFFINGTON is a parish and village three miles north-east from Shrewsbury. in the diocese of Lichfield, rural deanery of Shrewsbury, and hundred of Bradford (south division). Its area, including Pimley, is 1,401 acres. Haughmond Demesne, containing 1,654 acres, formerly extra-parochial, was united to Uffington by Order of Council on 5 December, 1884. The population of Uffington was 120 in 1801, and 150 in 1811. In 1891 there were 154 persons in Uffington, and 155 in Haughmond Demme; total population 309. In 1901 the population was 336.

The Parish Register Abstract, 1837, has this account of the Uffington Registers:- "Uffington P.C. Nos. I., II., Bap., Bur., 1578-1812. No. III., Marr., 1754-1812".

Vol. I., which extends from 1578 to 1729, consists of 44 parchment leaves 12 inches by 5 1/4 (some 6 1/4) inches, in boards with a leather back. From 1578 to 1600 it is copied from an old paper register, each page being signed by Thomas Ferington, John Yonge, and Richard Morreys. After 1609 there is a gap; then follows a blank page, with "Uffington Register" written on it. From 1682, larger parchment leaves are used, perhaps another Register fastened on. At the beginning of the volume is a list of Collections at Fasts in 1626-7. The register is generally clear and well written, but some leaves have been stained with some brown liquid.

Vol. II. extends from 1729 to 1812, but marriages only to 1753. It consists of 35 leaves of parchment, 13 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches, in a brown leather cover. Eleven of the leaves are blank. It is generally very well written and in good condition. At the end of the volume are a number of Terriers, and statistics of baptisms, marriages, and burials. &c.

Vol. III., which contains marriages from 1754 to 1812, is the ordinary printed form of marriage Register, and is a paper book in a parchment Cover.

The principal families entered in the Register are those of Yonge of Pimley, Barker of Haughmond, Kynaston of Adbrightlee, Corbet of Syndorne, Dod, Horner, Acherley, Stanier, and Leighton. The Clarkes of Uffington were ancestors of some celebrated Cambridge scholars and travellers. The Munslows, Ralphs, and Cartwrights, still of Uffington, all appear frequently in the earliest register.

The parish, including Haghmond Demesne, contains the beautiful ruins of Haughmond Abbey, Haughmond Hill, Sundorne Castle, and Pimley Manor, all the property of the Rev. G.W. Corbet.

Uffington, which derives its name from some Saxon Ufa, was held before the Conquest by Genut and Elveva. At Domesday it was held by Helgot under Earl Roger, and contained 5 hides and was worth 30s. From Helgot it descended to the de la Mares, and in 1192 Robert de la Mare returning

from the Crusades on his death-bed at Benevento bequeathed Uffington to Haughmond Abbey. The abbey continued to hold Uffington in frankalmoign of the Barony of Castle Holdgate. It afterwards passed to the Barkers, and from them to the Kynastons, and ultimately to the Corbets of Sundorne, who now own the manor and advowson.

The Church was originally founded by the de la Mares, and, the manor being originally in St. Alkmund's parish, passed circa 1155 to Lilleshall Abbey. The Abbot of Lilleshall, as rector of St. Alkmund's, appointed a chaplain to serve Uffington. The old Early English Church of the Holy Trinity was a plain structure, built of the rubble stone of the locality, and measured 40 feet by 18 feet; it was found to be in so bad a state, that it had to be almost entirely rebuilt in 1856. The present building consists of nave, chancel, western bell-turret, north aisle and south porch, and was consecrated on 21 May, 1856, the architect being Mr. S.P. Smith of Shrewsbury.

TERRIERS.

A True Terrier of all that is belonging to the Minister or Curate
of Uffington in the County of Salop, delivered in at the
Primary Visitation of the Right Reverend John Lord Bishop
of Lichfield, held at. St. Chad's Church, Shrewsbury, 14th
of August, 1845, also July 24, 1849.

A small house and garden adjoining to the S. Side of the
Churchyard. The house consists of entrance, 2 sitting rooms,
kitchen, back-kitchen, & pantry, with bedrooms over. A Stipend
of £5 6s. 8d a year reserved for the Curate of Uffington out of
Haughmond at the dissolution of that Abbey, as appears by the
grant to Sir R. Hill, dated the 13th April, 35 Henry 8.

A Rent Charge of £20 a year clear of taxes, payable out of
the tithes of Uffington & Pimley, settled by indenture, enrolled,
bearing date the 9th of June, 1735, between Corbet Kynaston,
Esq., of the 1st part, the Governors of Queen Anne's bounty of the

Another Rent Charge of £20 a year, settled by deed enrolled
bearing date the 29th of June, 1738, between the same parties,
payable out of the Tithes of Uffington Hayes, & the New Farm
(now called Sundorne), Haughmond Farm, Homebarns, & out of
the farms then occupied by E. Swinnerton, R. Buttery, R. Jones,
& Ed. Edwards, being the Demesne Land of Haughmond.

In the year 1815, the Sum of £200 was allotted by the
Governor of Queen Anne's Bounty as a further augmentation of
the Curacy, and there must have been another allottment of a like
Sum, for at the present time, Interest is received upon £400 at
3 1/4 per cent per an. from the said Governors.

N.B.- The payment of the Interest from the Governors of Bounty
is made once, or twice a year - either from 11th of April to
M. Summer - and from 15th October to Xmas - or if only once,
during the latter period, between the hours of 10 & 2 o'clock,
