Stirchley Registers.
The Parish Register Abstract, published in 1831, contains the following:- "Stirchley R. No. I., Bap., Bur., 1718-1812; Mar., 1718-1801. No. II., Mar., 1802-1812".
Since then an earlier Register has come to light, extending from July 28th, 1638, to July 27th, 1718. It is on vellum, measuring 13 1/2 inches by 4 1/2 inches, and consists of 10 1/2 leaves, pages 15 and 16 being blank, as is also the inside of the last leaf. It has been kept folded in the middle, and is torn in several places. The writing is so much faded that in many parts it is illegible, and here and there the same words have been traced afresh by a later hand.
Vol. II. (No. I. mentioned above) is also of vellum, containing 60 1/2 leaves, 29 1/2 of which are blank. It measures 13 inches by 6 1/2 inches, and is bound in strong boards covered with dark brown leather. Although in good preservation, the vellum is much wrinkled from exposure to damp, but the writing is clear and legible. It contains entries of baptisms and burials from 1718 to 1812, and marriages to 1801. The burials from April 9th, 1801, to August 5th, 1812, are entered separately at the end of the book, but in the following transcript they are incorporated with the births and marriages in their order of date.
Vol. III. contains marriages from 1802 to 1812, and is the ordinary printed form.
There are but six names to which "gentleman" is appended, viz.:- Edward Cooke (1680), Hugh Annerley (1784), Thomas Botfield (1801), Margaret Botfield, widow of the preceding (1803), Benjamin Nicholls and Win. Nicholls (1798). There is also an entry of the marriage of Mrs. Baronas Hayington to Thomas Cheshire, of Wrockwardine, in 1744; when buried she is called Baronas Cheshire, 1755.
The village of Stirchley is 3 miles west from Shifnal, and 2 miles north of Madeley, in the rural deanery of Shifnal, diocese of Lichfield, and hundred of South Bradford. The area of the parish is 833 acres, and the population at the census of 1881 was 258, and in 1891 only 187. In 1676 there were 50 "Conformists" over the age of 16, and no Nonconformists or Raman Catholics.
The church of St. James is a small brick building, consisting of a chancel, nave, and north transept. It was enlarged in 1838 by the late Thomas William and Beriah Botfield, Esqs., who placed a gallery over the transept for the use of their workmen. The chancel is divided from the nave by an exquisite Norman arch, unfortunately, in part, hidden both by the gallery and the reading desk.
There are mural tablets to the memory of the following persons:- Edward Cookes, Alice his wife, and five daughters: on the same tablet is

recorded, Bridgett Barroness Cheshire. On another, Thomas Botfield, Gent., and Margaret his wife; and a third is to the memory of Louisa Stamps.
On the north wall of the nave is an escutcheon bearing the arms of Mr. Thomas Cloves, who was buried October 19th. 1748:- Azure on a chevron engrailed between 3 unicorns' heads erased or as many crescents gules. Crest, a demi-lion rampant sable, ducally crowned or, supporting a battleaxe of the last, headed argent. The name of this gentleman is on the Benefaction Board:- "Oct. 15th, 1748. Thomas Clowes, Gentleman, gave by his will to the poor of Stirchley the yearly sum of twenty Shillings, payable out of Stirchley Hall Estates, to be distributed on St. Thomas's Day by the Churchwardens and Overseers.- May 20, 1839.- H.M. Phillips Rector. Wm. Smith, Churchwarden". On the same Board appears the following:- "June 26th, 1725, Rich. Cookes, Gentleman, gave by will to the Poor of Stirchley a Yearly Rent of seventeen Shillings, payable out of certain Premises belonging to John Roden at Stirchley, to be distributed by the Minister and Overseers".
Of the foundation of Stirchley, Eyton says ("Antiquities", vol. viii, p. 123):- "This was in its original state a chapel, probably in the Parish of Idsall [Shifnal], and founded by the Manorial Lords of Stirchley in the twelfth century. Its architectural features are alone sufficient to prove this antiquity of foundation. The subjection of Stirchley to Idsall has long since vanished. How or by whom the Advowson of Stirchley was given to Wenlock Priory I cannot say. We have seen that the Prior's title thereto was ratified by a fine in 1238. The Taxation of 1291 values the Church of Stirchley in the Deanery of Newport at £2 13s. 4d. per annum. In 1341 the Assessors of the Ninth taxed the Parish at 40s. There were no sheep here, and a third of the Manor was held in hand by the Abbot of Buildwas, who was not assessable to the current Tax. In an Inquest of the year 1379 the Church of Stirchley is valued at 100s. per annum, and certified to be in the gift of Wenlock Priory".
The following is a list of the Rectors of Stirchley:-
