Smethcote Registers.

SMETHCOTE is a parish in the diocese of Lichfield, and in the rural deanery and hundred of Condover; it lies 9 miles south-west from Shrewsbury, and 3 miles north of Church Stratton. The population in 1681 was 283, and the area is 2,705 acres.

The Parish Register Abstract, 1631, contains the following account of these Registers:- "Smethcote R. Nos. I. II. Bap. 1612-1812; Marr. 1612-1753. No. III. 1754-1812". The first volume, which extends from 1609 to 1767, is in bad condition. It was torn and faded, and has suffered much from damp and careless keeping in the past. It consists of 43 leaves of parchment, some few being loose sheets inserted, mostly 12 by 7 inches, but some few 22 by 6 inches. Some entries were illegible, but many have been restored, so that now nearly every entry can be made out. There was no cover, but the volume has recently been newly bound and lettered: "Smethcote Register 1609-1767". The Register was originally in 1612 intended to be divided into three portions, respectively headed:- De sepultis, De baptizatis, and De matrimonio conjunctis; but this intended arrangement did not continue long, for after the lapse of a few years entries were inserted wherever a blank space could be found, quite irrespective of date. The result is that the register is in a state of chaos. No attempt has been made to re-arrange the entries in chronological order, or else it would become almost impossible for the custodian of the register to find any special entry, so they are now printed in the exact order in which they occur in the volume. The earliest entries are in a good handwriting, and are in Latin, the entries in that language being retained, where they occur. From 1712 to 1745, C., M., and B., are inserted before the several entries. Many handwritings occur in this Register. The burials for 1612 are reprinted in fall; the remaining entries in an abbreviated form. Although there are three or four earlier beginning from the year 1609, the Register commences practically in 1612. The second volume, which contains baptisms and burials from 1747 to 1812, and marriages to 1753, has thirty-three leaves of parchment, bound in a cover, and is in good condition. From 1801 to 1812, baptisms and burials are recorded on separate pages, each page commencing a new year. The years are written in circles, often with very pretty devices etched round them. At the beginning of this register is an account of a trial in July 1749, concerning the right of advowson of Smethcote Rectory. At the end of the volume is a statement respecting the restoration of Smethcote church in 1850. Loosely inserted inside this register are four parchment leaves, sewn together, containing entries from 1759-1777, when the Register was neglected by the Rev. David Rice. These were collected from family Bibles and other sources, by the Rev. W.C. Curtis, curate, in 1792, and beautifully written out by him, at the request of the Bishop. The number of private baptisms that occur in the eighteenth century is astonishing. The third volume contains marriages from 1754 to 1811, and is on paper, in the usual printed form. There are eighty-five entries of marriages, filling twenty-nine pages.

Smethcote church is dedicated to St. Michael. It had fallen into a bad condition, and was almost entirely rebuilt in 1850, excepting parts of the north-west and west walls. In the north wall of the chancel is a small Norman window. Two square-headed Norman doorways are preserved, and pieces of Norman arches are built into the wall externally. In the church is an ancient font, not now in use. The ancient chalice has evidently been converted into an Elizabethan cup. At the west end of the church is a circular mound or barrow. The church was originally a chapel of Condover.

In 1392, William Bronington and Isabella his wife, and Roger son of John de Scottes Acton, were patrons of the rectory. In 1653, Thomas Phillips of Netley occurs as patron. Richard Beddowes, of Coton Hill, by his marriage with Anne daughter of Richard Phillips of Netley became patron, and presented in 1749. The patronage afterwards passed to the Hulme Trustees, in whom it is now vested. The families of Phillips and Wilding are among the chief families named in the Registers.

N.B.- On July the 26th, 1749; at the Nisi Prius Bar in Shrewsbury, came on,
by Writ of Quare impedit, before Baron Clive, a trial concerning the right
of Advowson of the Rectory of Smethcott, wherein Mr. Richard Beddow, of
Cotton Hill in Salop (the only son and heir, then living, to John Beddow,
Cler. late Rector of Smethcott, and of Anne his wife, one of the daughters
of Richard Philippes of Netley Esqr., patron of the Rectory of Smethcott)
was Plaintiff, and Mrs. Catherine Pope of Woolstaston, spinster, Mr. Joseph
Orme, Cler. Curate of Clunbury, and the Right Revd. Richard Lord Bp. of
Lich. and Coven. were Defendants. After tedious impleadings of six hours
long, the Special Jury, who were some of the principal Men in the County,
next Morn brought in their verdict for the plaintiff, and two years Value
of the benefice for damages according to Stat. 2nd Westr. At Michaelmas
Term following judgment was given at Westminster upon that verdict, and a
Writt issued out to the Bp. to amove Joseph Orme, the Usurpative Incumbent,
and to admitt a fit clerk at the presentation of Richard Beddow, the true
patron in full right.

The very next week after the verdict given at Salop, the Usurpative
Incumbent Joseph Orme, in order to shun the odious reproach of being
formally amoved by the Bp's Injunction and Inhibition affixed on the Church
Door, which he was informed would of course succeed the Verdict, and
Judgment when given at Westminster, and also to avoid the restoration of
the profits of the benefice since the decease of the last legall Incumbent,
Mr. Thomas Beddow (viz., the 26th of June, 1746, to the time of his amoval)
and no less desirous to secure his usurping Patroness Mrs. Pope from
payment of the damages, waited on the sd. Lord Bp. of Lich. and Cov. (Dr.
Richard Smalbroke) at

Eccleshall Castle, praying his Ldsp. to accept his resignation of the
Benefice, upon which condition he wth proper security wd execute a penal
bond of £500 to indemnify his Ldsp. and successors for ever. The
resignation was accepted, and Orme withdrew to his old Cure at Clunbury. In
November the Bp. was serv'd with the Writt, who immediately sent to the
legal patron Mr. Richard Beddow, requiring him to present a fit Clerk to
the Rectory of Smethcott; but before he had presented, the same Bp. dy'd at
London in December 1749.

In Feb. following, Dr. Fred. Cornwallis was consecrated Bp. of Lich. and
Coy., and in March following Mr. Beddow presented his Clerk, David Rice,
Cler. Curate of Leebottwood and Longnor, who was since the late Incumbent's
death (viz. Mr. Thos. Beddow's) the only and singular friend of Mr. Richard
Beddow in the wbole affair. He waited of the New Bp. at London, was
admitted and instituted Rector of Smethcott, and in April following was
inducted personally to the same, to the universal joy and satisfaction of
all haters of oppression and wrong, and of all true lovers of Truth,
Justice, Honesty and Virtue.

Mr. Rice, the late Rector of Smethcote, having neglected to register the
Births, Baptism, and Burials, in this parish, from the year 1759 to 1763,
and from 1763 to 1777, I William Crosse Curtis, now Curate of Smethcote,
have in the year 1792, by Direction of the Lord Bishop of this Diocese,
collected the following from such Documents, as I have have been able to
procure.

Burials for the years 1766, 1767, which may be seen by reference to the

Thinking that a brief statement of the facts relating to the rebuilding of
their Church will be interesting to future Rectors and Parishioners of Smethcote,
I have determined, while they are fresh in my memory, to write them down on these
spare pages of an old parchment Register. Most truly thankful ought we to be,
that it pleased God to put into our hearts the good desire of rebuilding his
house, and also that he was graciously pleased to enable us, without loss of
life or injury of limb to any one concerned, to bring the same to good effect.

The Church having been for many years in a very dilapidated state, and there
being no features of interest in it worthy of preservation, save two or three
which will be mentioned hereafter, the Parishioners decided to pull it all down,
excepting a small part of the West end, and of the side walls of the Porch,
together with a few square yards on each side of the Porch, which old portions
can easily be identified by the masonry and joints being so much rougher than
those of the new work. The Architect chosen was J.P. Harrison Esqr. M.A. late
of Christ Church, Oxford. The first stone was on the 5th day of June 1849 laid
by the wife of the Rector, Mr. Buddicom, the daughter and eventually the heiress
of William Pinches, Esq'. of

Ticklerton, Salop. The whole of the work, with the exception of the East Window,
which was made at Shrewsbury, was executed as daywork by country artificers,
from the drawings sent by the Architect. The roof was made up partly of the old
timber and partly of new oak, and was the design and workmanship of a most
ingenious parishioner, named William Hill. The rough stone came from a Quarry
in the dingle North of the Church, the free stone, except that used for the
tracery of the windows, which is Grinsbill Stone, from the Hoar Edge, behind
the Lawley. The width of the new Church is the same as that of the old one,
but it is 51 ft. longer, the former edifice having only reached to the point
marked by an upright joint in the North Wall of the Chancel to the Eastward of
the little Lancet window, which window was carefully taken down and then replaced
stone by stone. The Chancel window on the South side is a copy of an old one, which
stood in the same place, but was too much mutilated to be reinserted. The large
stone over the Chancel door was put up again, as was also that over the North
doorway. There was a similar but longer stone over the South door, but, as it
was broken, a new arch was substituted for it. Four curiously worked stones,
found in the old structure and supposed to have belonged to a still older and
Norman Church, are built into the North and South Walls of the Chancel. The
New Church was opened on the 27th. of June 1850, when Dr. Lonsdale, the Lord
Bishop of Litchfield, preached the Sermon, and a large congregation attended.
The whole cost of the Church, exclusive of the old materials and the cartage
given, was about £650, which was thus defrayed:

Notice required by the Incorporated Society.
This Church was enlarged and the seats therein rearranged in the year
1850, by which means additional accommodation for 32 persons was
obtained. A grant of £625 in aid of the undertaking was made by the
Incorporated Society for the Building, Rebuilding and Repairing of
Churches and Chapels, on condition that 65 seats described in a plan,
should be set apart and declared to be free for ever for the use of
the poor. The provision of the room previously to the alteration being
to the extent of 132 seats, 25 of which number were free for the use
of the poor.
