The Register of
More.

More Registers.

More is a parish, in the diocese of Hereford, Archdeaconry of Ludlow, rural deanery of Bishop's Castle (until recently in that of Clun), and hundred of Parslow. The area is 3511 acres, and the population in 1891 was 178.

The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, contains this notice of the Registers of More:- "More R. Nos. I.-IV. Registers (Parchment), 1600-1812". As will be seen, this account is both inaccurate and incomplete.

The First Old Register Book of More begins in 1569, and goes to 1686. It is parchment, and consists of twenty two leaves besides the cover. It is in English with bits of Latin put in during the latter part of the 17th century. It is in a very bad condition through damp, and it would appear wanton destruction. The top and outside edges of most pages are utterly gone; some entries have been wantonly scratched out; others purposely obliterated with some red fluid. Two pages have been cut in half, and one page torn in half. Many of the early entries were so faded by damp as to be quite unreadable.

The Second Register Book begins in 1687, and goes to 1762, and consists of twenty leaves besides the cover. All in good order and condition.

The Third Register Book begins in 1763, and goes to 1808. Baptisms and Burials only. Gaps 1786 to 1789, and 1808.

The principal family named in the Registers is that of More (or Moore) of More, Linley, and Larden. Amongst other entries will be found: the burial in 1662 of Samuel More, the parliamentary colonel, who defended Hopton Castle, and sat in Cromwell's parliament, 1656; the marriage in 1659 of his daughter Ann to John Turton, afterwards Justice K.B.; and the burial in 1698 of his son Richard More, M.P., for Bishop's Castle for ten years.

Other families styled gent. or Mr. in the Registers are those of Bradoxe, Farmer, Pickering, Young, &c.

A list of the early rectors of More from 1220 to 1417, is given in Eyton's Antiquities of Shropshire, XI, 291-2. The following later rectors are named in the Registers :-

The More family are patrons of the Rectory.

The Church, which is dedicated to St. Peter, was originally an affiliation of Lydbury North, but became independent at an early date. In 1291, it was valued at £4 6s. 8d. per annum. The Valor of 1534-5 returns it as worth £8 13s. 4d. per annum. The present building was partially rebuilt in 1845, in the Early English style. There is an engraved view of the old Church in "Eyton". There are three bells, inscribed as follows:- 1612, Gloria in Excelsis Deo. 1617, Jesus bee our speede. 1624, Cantate Domino Canticum Novum. In the tower is an old library, the gift of Richard More in 32 Charles II., "to teach the minister sound doctrine". More was originally a member of Lydham, but became temp. Henry I., a tenure by grand serjeantry. The lord of More had to command 200 foot-soldiers, whenever ally King of England marched into Wales, and he himself was to march in the vanguard of the army, and with his own hands to carry the King's standard. Adam de la More was head of the More family in 1157, but was dead in 1180. His descendants have continued to be lords of More and patrons of the rectory to the present day.

A presentment of More and Moreswood in 1688 states: "We have no murders bloodsheeds or robberies in ye Constablwick committed. We have no ale house either licensed or unlicensed whereby the assize of bread or ale should be broken. We have no common drunkards. We have no eavdroppers, whereby to make dissention between neighbour and neighbour".

The Registers were transcribed partly by a gentleman who has done much good work for the Society in the Deanery of Clun, and partly by the present rector, who has himself compared the proof-sheets with the original registers as they passed through the press, and by whose kind permission they are here printed.

Memorandum.- I hereby certify that on becoming Rector of
More in the year 1860 I received the Register Books exactly in
their present state. No registers appear to have been made
between A.D. 1807 and 1813. It appears to have been intended
to enter some after those of the year 1784, but none are down
there.

On Thursday, ye 10th of March, 1783, I put the bones of two
skeletons into the ground in the Court near the end of this
house, which bones were left here by the Executors of the late
Rector, Mr. Hazlewood. I enter this memorandum that, if
hereafter these bones should be dug up, people may not be
surprized at finding human bones in such a place.
