The Register
of
Milson.

Milson Registers.

MILSON is a scattered parish in South Shropshire, bounded by those of Neen Solars on the south and east, Cleobury Mortimer on the north, and Coreley on the west. It touches on Worcestershire at one southern point.

The village is 11 miles from Ludlow, and lies on the road from Tenbury to Cleobury Mortimer, 4 miles from the latter.

It is in the Hundred of Overs, rural deanery of Burford, archdeaconry of Ludlow, and diocese of Hereford.

In 1086, it is mentioned as a berewick of Neen Solars, though in a different hundred, Neen being at that date in Condetret Hundred, and Milson in Overs.

Domesday, after stating this fact, says: Here are three and half hides geldable. The arable land is enough for six ox-teams. Here three Radmans and three Villeins have three teams. In King Edward's time it was worth 14s. (per annum) now it is worth 10s. Osbern fitz Richard (also lord of Neen Solars) found it waste.

The chief tenants of the Barons of Richard's Castle at Mulstone, as the word was originally written, occur in the 12th century as taking their name from the place. They held the Vill under the Barons till at least the close of the 13th century, when it seems to have been inherited by members of the Goddard family, and in 1350, Robert Partrich held a considerable estate here.

In 1327, the lay Subsidy Roll gives the names of eleven tenants at Milson, all comparatively well-to-do. Christiana de Mulston was the lowest assessment, but it is possible that she was connected with the early owners. Amicia Godard, Walter de Malleye (Hawley), Richard de Paterclive (? Partrich), Philip de Perye and Richard the Miller, were all rated at 2s. and over, and £2 worth of moveable goods would in those days represent a value of over £50 in modern money. (This subsidy, granted to Edward III., was that of a twentieth of all moveable goods, except the horses, armour, plate and jewels of knights, they being already amerced in other ways for the French Wars.) Roger and Robert de Hull, William de Ferne, Hugh de Lutteley, and Richard Bercar (i.e., Shepherd) were less well off than those first mentioned, but they were still distinctly prosperous.

Blakeway's MSS. in the Bodleian Library gives the following account of Milson:- ...*

" Milstone does not occur in Testa de Nevill, but in the book of Fees, 23 Edward I. John Goddoure and William son of Hugh (perhaps Hugh de Frene, coparcener of Neen Solers) held Multon for half a knight's fee of Robert de Mortimer. Hugh Gower held Multon in 9 Edward II. In 12 Edward III. William de Frene granted his lands in Mulston to John Goddard and Margaret his wife. In 2 Henry V. a fine is levied of the Manor of Mulston, Thomas Lygon, complainant, and Richard Bulle and Cecile his wife, deforciants. In 23 Henry VI. Henry Lochard, esq.,

lord of the manor, levies a fine of it. In 16 Edward IV. a fine is levied of the manor of Mulston, Richard Littleton, complainant, and Walter Cresset and Margaret his wife, daughter and heir of John Holton, deforciants; in which it was acknowledged to be the right of the said Richard: notwithstanding which fine, his father Sir Thomas, the celebrated author of the Tenures, in his will dated 22 August, 1481, bequeaths to his said son " the reversion of the Manor of Molston besyde Clybery in the County of Shrewsbury "; and in the same year my authorities if correct state Cresset and his wife, who appear to have passed the manor away by fine five years before, to be still possessing it. However, Mr. Littleton appears to have ultimately succeeded to the Manor. He was second son of the Judge, and ancester of the baronets of Pillaton in Staffordshire. Francis Littleton, a younger brother of his great-grandson, Sir Edward Littleton, is styled of this place, and left issue.

The Manor of Milston afterwards became the property of a family named Hunt. See Harl. MS., 1396.

John Hunt, of Milston. = Joan Archer of Aberley, co. Worc.
Thomas Hunt of Milston. = Elizabeth Hervey of Whitton, co. Salop.
John Hunt, serjeant at arms = Sarah, daughter of Richard Hunt.
to King Charles I., afterwards to I Richard Billet of Suffolk.
the Parliament.
Henry Hunt, aged 16 in 1635. (bur. at Milson, 1692.)

No Arms could be proved, yet Serjeant Hunt was buried with escutcheons, party per pale indented a saltire counterchanged. Apparently the Serjeant's issue failed.

Richard Hunt = Elizabeth, sister of Thomas Powys of Henley,
Serjeant at law.
Elizabeth Hunt, born 24 December, 1654 = John Edwards. died 2 December, 1727.

Elizabeth, widow of Richard Hunt, married secondly Henry Mytton, esq., of Shipton, to whose son Thomas his half-sister Mrs. Edwards devised the manor and courthouse of Milston, and they are now the property of his grandson Thomas Mytton, esq., of North Cleobury.

The Rev. J. B. Blakeway thus takes the history of the manor down to the early 19th century. Since his time the estate has passed to the Tomkinson family. Thomas Mytton, of Cleobury North, who died in 1829, left a son, Henry George, and four daughters.

The Hunt family of Longnor (afterwards of Boreatton) bore the arms ascribed to Sergeant Hunt, differenced by a crescent to show a younger branch. One of this family also, Richard Hunt, was a serjeant-at-arms in 1623. One account gives Ryton in Condover parish as the original home of the Myttons of Shipton. If this were so, and the Hunts of Milson came of the same stock as those of Longnor (also in the old parish of Condover), there may have been an inherited friendship between the families.

Members of the Hunt family continued to live at Milson into the 8th century. William Hunt, whose son, Fabian, was buried on March 6, 1683-4, seems to have lived till 1718, and another Fabian Hunt was buried in 1721. William Hunt was a churchwarden in 1700, 1707 and 1715. An earlier William Hunt was buried in 1691, and Henry Hunt (apparently the Henry aged 16 in 1635) was buried in 1692. The last of the name in the registers is Martha Hunt, buried in 1741.

MILSON REGISTERS. v.

In 1553, Edward VI. commissioners reported that at Mylstone Chapel, Richard Luce was parson, and Humphrey Sym ... (half the name is illegible) and Harry Wyggemore, church wardens. They were held responsible for the safe keeping of three bells of one accord, and a chalice of silver with a paten, parcell gilt.

One of the old three bells still remains. It is probably of 14th century date but bears no inscription. The second bell was cast by Abraham Rudhall in 1698, and the third is apparently of the 17th century, but uninscribed. A small bell, cast by Abraham Rudhall, seems to have been added in 1723.

At the time of the Commonwealth, Milson was placed in the fifth Shropshire Classis, which was practically that of Ludlow. In 1676, the parish had 62 inhabitants above the age of 16, all " Conformists.'

The list of clergy and patrons of the living is identical with that of Neen Solars, given in the introduction to that register.

The Registers extant contain few items of interest. The prefix " Mr." is given in 1782 to Thomas Yarranton who is noted as having died on the same day as his son was born, and 4 years later, Mr. John Yarranton is mentioned. Mr. Legas occurs in 1701, and Mr. Sheppard in 1702, probably the latter was identical with Mr. Richard Sheppard who was one of the churchwardens in 1695, and who died in 1711, and the former with Sebastian Legas, warden in 1694. Mr. John Yarranton is mentioned in the Neen Solars register as having been married at Neen Savage on April 24, 1783.

There are a few unusual names: Fabian, Ferdinando, Vincent, Fishley, and Ambrose, among masculine ones, and Fabia, Amiab, Sebra, Timothea, and Drusilla in feminine.

The only registers now extant are:

I. The book of baptisms dating from 1706-1812. It contains the entries of marriages to 1753, and one of 1812.

II. The volume of burials which begins in 1678, and for the first 5 the years entries carefully record in full the affidavit of the burial in woollen.

III. The Marriage Register of 1756-1809 in the ordinary paper book.

The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 gives: " Milson P.C. No. 1 (parchment), Bap., 1716-1812; No. II., Bur., 1678-1812; No. III., Mar., 1756-1809. No other registers can be found."

Probably earlier extracts could be obtained from the Bishop's Transcripts at Hereford.

Milson and Neen have been intimately connected since the 11th century, and probably longer. Their churches were held as one Rectory, and we have no list of separate incumbents of Milson. There is documentary record of the existence of the Church of Neen in the 13th century, and the architecture of Milson goes back to the 12th century, or possibly the close of the 11th. There are two early stone slabs near the door. The inscribed cross on the one in the porch is of rather unusual design.

The Church of St. George consists of chancel and nave of Norman date, and a tower of late 12th or early 13th century stone work with a timber roof, old, but probably not co-eval with the base. There is a picturesque timber porch of the 14th century, and some modern additions in the chancel roof and the east window. The latter was in a ruinous condition when rebuilt by the Rev. J. Baker.

vi. MILSON REGISTERS.

It is remarkable that although the parishes of Milson and Neen Solars have been so intimately connected the estates have been quite separate, and no names except those of the clergy seem found in both registers. No Hunt entries occur at Neen Solars, and no Coningsby ones at Milson, Mistress Joyce Jeffreys (the daughter of Henry Jeffreys of Ham Castle in the Teme Valley, and his wife Anne, the widow of John Coningsby of Neen), who inherited the interest of her half-brother, Humphrey Coningsby in Neen, seems to have had no connection with Milson.

The Registers were copied by Mr. T. R. Horton, and the copy has been collated with the original by the Rev. W. G. D. Fletcher. They are here printed by the kind permission of the Rev. E. J. Newell, Rector of Milson and Neen Solars.
