Melverley Parish Register.
1723 to 1812.
AMONG the Curates-in-Charge, whose names occur in the Registers, the most eminent was William Worthington, 1726-1729, a learned and voluminous writer on Christian Evidences, Canon of St. Asaph, 1773, and Chaplain to Bishop Drummond, who, on his translation to York, promoted him also in that Cathedral.
An account of the curious timbered Church and of the Parish will be found in Archdeacon Thomas's History of the Diocese of St. Asaph, p. 642.
The Parish Register abstract of 1831 gives the following account of these Registers: "Melverley P.C.- No. 1, Baptisms, Burials, 1723-1784; Marriages, 1723-1753. No. 2, Baptisms, 1785-1812. No. 3, Burials, 1785-1812. No. 4, Marriages, 1754-1811". To these must now be added No. 5, Marriages, 1813-1836. No. 6, Baptisms, 1813-; 7, Marriages, 1837-; 8, Burials, 1813-; these last three being still in use.
Of the above, in:-
No. 1. The Entries are made promiscuously, but in order of time. They are on parchment, and well kept; being usually attested by the Curate and the Church-wardens.
At the end is a Copy of the Terrier of 1749 and a Note stating that the same Terrier had been sent in 1774 with a slight correction as to trees on the Glebe and the Churchyard.

No. 2. Marriage, 1754-1811.
The Banns and Marriages are combined: they are in good condition, but only a few pages of the book are filled. They are on paper.
No. 3. Births and Baptisms, 1785-1812.
Paper 17 in. x 11 in. Ruled in red lines for Child's Name, Parents' Abode, Birth and Baptism, according to Month, Day and Year respectively. Very few pages used up. But there are a few Memoranda by the Rev. H. Prichard, relating to the Church Restoration and the Reopening Services, 1878.
No. 4. Corresponding Register of Burials, 1785-1812.
A curious expression is made use of in the burial of "ye wife Guest of ye p. of Llandysilio, 3rd November, 1746," the term being equivalent to midwife; and an amusing stanza is attached to a wedding on the 17th December, 1766:-
This morning I have put a Tye
No man could put it faster
'Tween Matthew Dod, the man of God
And modest Nellie Foster.

A Terrier shewing what Glebe Tithes and costoms etc., in the Parish of Melverly and county of Salop which belong to the Right Revd ye Lord Bishop of St. Asaph Delivered to the Register by his Lordships orders in his primary visitation at Oswestry August ye 30th 1749.
1st We have no Parsonage or Vicarage House or out Houses upon any part of the Gleb. 2d The Gleb is one piece of pasture land calld the Church Croft, the one side joines to the lands of Rich Edwards, ye other side joines to the high Road, the other side joins to narrow Lane, ye other side to a common field called the Bryn containing by estimation two acres; there is together in one place in a common field ye Bryn two Butts or selions of Land, the lands of Sr Watkin Williams on the one side and the lands of Thomas Williams on the other side containing by estimation about halph an acre, there is two butts more in the same field call'd the Bryn, the lands of Rich Edwards both sides of the one and the lands of Thos Kynaston Esqr on the other side, ye two Butts by estimation contains no more than three parts of an acre, there is one butt of Land in a common field called Brennal, the lands of the late Wm Thomas, now Rich Bevan, on the side and lands of Tho. Williams part on the other side, and lands of Mr Oswell (Battrich) on the remaining part of the other side containing by estimation one acre, there is one butt of Land more in the same

field calld Brennol, ye lands of Rich Edwards on the one side and the lands belonging to the Poor of the Parish of Shawbury on the other side, containing the third of an acre (There is no Timber upon ye Gleb). 3d The Tithe of all sorts of grain payable to the church, that is of Wheat Barley Oates Pease Vetches together with Tith of Flax Hay and Clover, as for Tith Hemp there is none due. there is paid from each house that is Inhabited three pence that is a penny house a penny hempyard and penny Garden which is in Lieu of som small Tithes which are costomary in other Places. There is due the tenth lamb and the tenth fleece of wool, for every odd lamb the costom is three pence, for every odd fleece of wool one penny, and for every odd cald double pound of wool two pence.
All persons yt live out of the Parish which have a Right to common by houlding lands within the Parish who pay neither wool nor lamb to the Tithe but after they are shorne pasture them upon ye common ye costom is that they must pay to the farmers of ye Tithe for evry month four pence a Score for every month they continue thereon. There is due a Pigg from every sow, if she has but two or three or ever so many there is but one due. There is due a Goos for evry parcel if there be but two or three in the Parcel or ever so many but one due, if they keep two Ganders att one House there is due a Goose from each Gandarts Parcel being more or less. For evry coult two pence. For a Milch Cow one penny, for a Heifer of the first Calfe, or Barren there is nothing due, from every one that houlds any pasture lands, he or they living out of the said Parish, pay one shilling and eightpence for each pound to the Tithe. 4th There are no gifts or bequests. There is one Bell, a Comunion Table and Green Cloth, and one chest, one silver Cup weighing about twelve ounces, another silver cup weighing about eleven ounces the gift of Henry Morgan, one silver salver mark'd "A.G." weighing six ounces, one pewter Plate, one Pewter Tankerd, one Folio Bible, one Folio Common Prayer, A Register Book, a Book of accounts, a linen Cloth to cover the Bred and wine; The whole repairs of the church belong to the Parishoners. The church yard also is fencd by the inhabitance of the Parish and each one knows his own part.
The Clerk is chosen by the minister, and the sallery is paid him out of the Tithe by the Farmers of the Tithe (vis.) one thrave of wheat and four thrave of oates, the clerk by [blank] chuses from any one person in the parish that has such a quantity if that

person has not he goes to another to make up such a quantity as is afore menconed of each. there has formerly bin paid ye clerk 40 shill in money in lieu of corne by ye propriators of the Tithe by the clerks choice.
