Lydham is a parish situate about two miles northeast from Bishop's Castle, in the rural deanery, of Clun, archdeaconry of Ludlow, diocese of Hereford, and hundred of Purslow.

The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, contains this account of the Parish Registers of Lydham: " Ledon, otherwise Lydham R. No. I., Bap., Bur., Marr., 1596-1659. No. II., Bap., Bur., Marr., 1670-1711, interrupted by No. III., Bap., Bur., Marr., 1690-1702, by No. IV., Bap., Bur., 1704-1753, and by No. V., Bap., Bur., 1751-1812. No. VI., Marr., 1755-1812. No Register 1659-1679, no Marr. Register 1711-1755 can be found. "

The Registers of Lydham are contained in six vols.

Vol. I. begins in 1597 and ends 1660. It contains 32 leaves, besides the cover, which is an old deed of the time of Elizabeth between John Longford and Hugh Langford, of co. Hereford, concerning land at Kyneton, co. Hereford. The vol., which is of parchment, has had 7 leaves added outside the original cover

Vol. II. begins 1679 and goes to 1711. It is of paper, and contains the entries of burials in woollen front 1679 to 1688, and then goes on with a rough copy of the general register from 1707 to 1711. Apparently some leaves are missing. It contains 12 leaves and part of the cover. There is a gap from 1689 to 1707.

Vol. III. begins 1690 and goes to 1702. It contains 5 leaves only, besides the cover, on which are entries.

Vol. IV. begins 1704 and goes to 1750. It contains 20 leaves, besides the cover.

Vol. V. begins 1751 and ends 1812. It contains 23 leaves, besides the cover.

Vol. VI. begins 1755 and ends 1812. It contains 19 leaves of Banns and Marriages only.

The most important families that occur in the Register are those of Oakeley of Oakeley, Herbert, Baxter, Bright, Collins, Bill, and Blainey.

The parish of Lydham contains 2,885 acres, and in 1891 possessed 156 inhabitants, of whom 56 were of Aston, which, though in the parish of Lydham, is in Montgomeryshire.

The Domesday Book tells us that before the Conquest, Edric Sylvaticus was Lord of the Manor of Lydham, but later Earl Roger de Montgomery kept it in his own hands, and its value had increased since the change of ownership. It was then a large manor of 15 hides, with a mill and two

leagues of wood. The inhabitants were 14 villeins with a bailiff and a priest, six bordars (bordarii), who were tenants superior to the villeins and did not pass with the land on which they lived, and six radmans - tenants another degree higher still. On the forfeiture of Earl Robert de Belesme, Henry I. made Lydham part of the Honour of Montgomery, and separated More from it. In the 12th century it was held by Baldwin de Boulers, whose widow Wentlian is mentioned as presenting to the church. Later it was in the hands of the Cantilupes, and in 1265 was granted by the King to Adam de Montgomery, who in 1267 obtained a charter tor a weekly market there on Fridays, and two annual fairs which were to be held on the eve, the day, and two days following the feasts of SS. Philip and James, and St. Mary Magdalene. Before the middle of the 14th century Lydham had passed into the hands of the Charltons, lords of Powis. Aston was in the 13th century a part of the estate of the Bishops of Hereford, though at one time alienated to the Honour of Montgomery. The Lea, near Lydham, but in the parish of Bishop's Castle, was in the early 17th century the home of Vincent Edwardes, the parents of whose wife, Mary Kemsey, were buried at Lydham in 1601. Priamus Lloyd, whose daughter Elizabeth was buried a1 Lydham in 1608, married Katherine, daughter of Edward Fox of Greet. The Foxes were connected by marriage with the Herberts. The modern house of Oakeley is in Lydham parish, but the township is in that of Bishop's Castle.

The mention of a priest at Lydham in 1086 shows the early existence of a church here. The advowson was in the hands of the lord of the manor, and almost throughout the 14th century the rectors were presented by the Charltons, lords of Powys. In 1710, 1727, and 1741, it was presented to by Richard Oakeley, and 1778 by John Oakeley, and remained with the Oakeley family till it passed recently to Arthur H. Sykes, Esq.

In 1255 the benefice was valued at 100s., and in 1534-5 it was given as worth £10, less 6d. for synodals. The Rector at this latter date was Roger Walcott. A list of the early rectors during the 13th and 14th centuries is given by Mr. Eyton in the " Antiquities of Shropshire," vol. XI., p. 283, as follows:-

The Church, which is dedicated to the Holy Trinity, consists of chancel, nave, south porch, and a small western turret containing two bells, and is in the decorated style of architecture. It was restored in 1885, when the plaster ceiling was removed, and a fine old timber roof in the nave and chancel was opened out.

In 1553, Thomas Edwards was parson of " Ledom," and Rowland Morys, churchwarden, when the following goods were committed to their charge:- " Inprimis a chalys of sylvyr. It: a vestement yt ys of grene sylke and crule. It: a vestyment of wyte crule. It: a vestyment of grene sylke. It: ij auterclothys and ij candelstyks of bras. It: ij bellys and a cruss of bras. It: ij cruetts of lede. It: a cope of branch damaske coloryd blew."

In a " religious census " taken of Shropshire in 1676 Lydham possessed 125 inhabitants above the age of 15, all " Conformists," and More 153, while Clunbury with 329 Conformists had 5 Nonconformists. This shows a great decrease in the population in the two hundred years.

The registers have been transcribed by a gentleman who has kindly undertaken those in the Deanery of Clun, and the proofs as they passed through the press have been compared with the original registers by Miss Auden. They are here printed by permission of the Rector, the Rev. E.C. Gathercole.
