The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 gives this account of the Registers:-
" Knockin R. ... Bap. 1672-1762, Marr. 1681-1753. No, II., III., Bap. 1763-1812, Nos. IV., V., Marr. 1754-1812. The Churchyard was not consecrated until 1818."
The Terrier of the Archdeaconry of Montgomery, 1908, describes them as kept in an iron safe in the Vestry, and consisting of-
" 1661-1762, Parchment, well bound, containing Notices of several of the Rectors, and on pp. 1 and 3 Churchwardens' Accounts (1664 and 1666).
1762-1794, containing a complete list of the Rectors: Terriers of 1763, 1774, 1791, and 1856; Note re £36 L. & N. W. Railway Debenture Stock, bought with money received from Insurance Office for the old Barn which was burnt down.
1793-1812 contains Burials 1817.

The discrepancy in the commencing date of the first Volume is explained by the circumstance that the years 1661-1672 are made up for the most part from family records,
The following account of the Parish is taken from my History of the Diocese of St Asaph, Vol. III., pp. 11-15, which is itself much indebted to Eyton's Antiquities of Shropshire, x., pp. 371-377.
Until near the end of the twelfth century this parish was an integral part of Kinnerley, but between 1182-95, Radulphus Extraneus (Ralph L'Estrange) founded the " Chapel of Knockyn," and gave the patronage, with its appurtenances, to Haughmond Abbey; and between 1197-1200, his successor, John L'Estrange, gave and confirmed to the said abbey the "new Chapel of Knockyn, with the ground whereon it was built, with free access, and with all its appurtenances and obventions," and " all the land of Norslene with the upper pool near his castle of Knockin." Their respective shares in the tithes were settled about the same time by a charter of Bishop Reyner, which ordered " quod persona de Knokin tenebit omnes decimas de Knokin et de Norslepe et omnes obvenciones earundem villarum praeter sepulturam et medietatem testamenti, annuatim solvendo xiid. predicte ecclesie de Kinardesley in festo Sancte Brigide." Between 1204-10 Bishop Reyner further confirmed Ralph L'Estrange's grant of the chapel to Haughmond Abbey, and invested Ralph, the abbot, as its representative; subject, however, to the aforesaid pension to the mother church. About forty years later a dispute arose concerning some of these tithes, which was referred to papal arbitration; and the sentence, passed June 1st, 1248, states that-
The Abbot released and gave up to Brother Thomas, Master of the Hospitallers, as Rector of Kinnerley, certain instruments concerning Kinnerley Church, which had been obtained by his convent, as also the tithes and the principle legatum of the whole land of Osberneston; and Brother Thomas, on his part, released to the Abbot all the tithes in dispute (except those of Osberneston), and the principale legatum of all parishioners of the vill of Knockin.

payable. Every Tenth Lamb is due to the Rector yeand in the Parish.
Half a Lamb being due at the number five, at six half a Lamb and one
Penny; at seven half a Lamb and two Pence or receive for halfe the
value of the Lamb and allow accordingly; and a whole Lamb at eight, the
Rector paying two pence, at nine one Penny.
The same custom is observed in Tithing wool shorn in the Parish as in

Evidences and the knowledge of the Ancient Inhabitants at a Vestry
holden this 9th day of July, 1791, pursuant to due and legal notice
given in Church on Sunday last for that purpose and exhibited at the
primary Visitation of the Right Revd. Father in God Lewis Lord Bishop

A Terrier of all the glebe lands, messuages, Tenements and other
rights belonging to the Rector and Parish Church of Knockin, in the
County of Salop, and Diocese of St. Asaph now in the use and
possession of the Revd. Robt. Ridsdale Rector there or his tenants,
taken, made and renewed according to the old evidences and the
knowledge of the ancient inhabitants at a Vestry holden this first
day of August, 1856, pursuant to due and legal notice given for that
purpose. The Tithes of the Parish were commuted according to Act of
Parliament on the 5th of September, in the year of our Lord 1840.
From the apportionment it appears that the estimated quantity in
statute measure of land subject to Tithes within the said Parish is
as follows: Arable land 900 acres, meadow or pasture land 634 acres,
3 roods and 3 perches, Woodland 27 acres rood and 1 perch, glebe
belonging to the Rector 1 rood and 32 perches. At the same time the
rent charge to be paid to the Rector of Knockin for the time being,
in lieu of Tithes, was fixed at the annual sum of Three hundred and
twenty-eight pounds, subject to the provisions of the said Act,
together with a further sum of one shilling and sixpence, instead of
the great tithes, and a further sum of sixpence instead of the small
Tithes, whenever the said glebe or any part thereof shall not be in
the manurance of the Rector for the time being.
The glebe is a piece of ground measuring 1 rood and 32 perches nor
far from the West end of the Church, and adjoining the Church yard,
upon which stands a building; used partly as a barn and partly as a
Dwelling House, in the occupation of Thomas Barrett and Jane Evans
respectively. The surplice fees due to the Rector are as follows:-
For Churching a woman one shilling, if non-resident two shillings.
For Publication of Banns one shilling and sixpence.

The Books, Vestments and Church Utensils now in the Church are one
Folio Bible, one Folio Book of Common Prayer, one Book of Offices,
one for the Publication of Banns, Four Register Books, one Surplice,
one Woollen Cloth for covering of the Communion Table, one pulpit
Cushion, one linen napkin, one linen Table Cover, Two Silver Chalices
and one Paten. One small Bell, one Iron Safe in the Vestry. The
chancel is repaired at the expense of the Rector, the body of the
Church at the expense of the Parishioners. The above was approved of
by us the undersigned in Vestry assembled this first day of August,
1856, as witness our hands.

The sum of Thirty-six Pounds received from the Yorkshire Insurance
Company for the barn and dwelling house formerly standing near the
Western approach to the Church which was burnt down was invested in
the name of the Patron of the living, Orlando George Charles, Earl of
Bradford, in the purchase of £36 of London and North-Western Railway
Debenture Stock on the 22nd day of July, 1870.
The certificate was held on behalf of the said Earl of Bradford by
Mr. Peter Potter until the 6th of October, 1883, when his son, Mr.
Fredk. Potter, forwarded it to Mr. Edward Griffiths of Knockin, who
holds the same, and the interest thereon is payable half-yearly to
him on behalf of the Rector of Knockin.
