The Register of Edgton.

Edgton is a parish, five miles north-east from Bishop's Castle, in the diocese of Hereford, rural deanery of Clun, and hundred of Purslow. It includes the townships of Horderley formerly extra-parochial), Brownslow, and Ridgeway. The parish contains 1,652 acres, and the population in 1881 was 223.

The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, gives this account of the Edgton Registers:- " Edgton P.C. No. I. Bap. Bur. 1722-1794. Marr. 1722-1753. No. II., Bap. Bur. 1795-1812. No. III., Marr. 1754-1812."

The first volume. which begins in 1722 and ends in 1794, consists of 26 leaves of parchment. Its cover is a deed, the date of which is missing, between Humphrey Sandford, son of Richard Sandford, deceased, and Humphrey Rawlins and Lucy, his wife, and Thomas, their son. It is in good condition. The second volume. which extends from 1795 to 1812, has only five leaves of parchment. The third volume is the usual printed marriage Register. It extends from 1754 to 1811, and contains seventeen paper leaves of banns and marriages only. At the end of the book are some extracts relating to the Sandford family, taken from the transcripts in the Diocesan Registry at Hereford. Nothing is known of any Registers prior to the year 1722. The earlier ones are lost.

The most important family that occurs in the Register is that of Sandford, now of the Isle of Rossall. Other old families of this parish are those of Lucas (styled " Mr." in the Register), James, and Bright. The Birds are sometimes styled " gent," and were here in 1552.

The church of Edgton was originally merely a chapelry of Clun, and in the reign of Richard I. was granted, with Clun Church, to Wenlock Priory. Edgton Chapel was absorbed into the Church of Clun, and was virtually suppressed. Its Incumbents are not recorded in the Hereford Diocesan Registers. In 1580 Queen Elizabeth granted the church of Clun with its chapels (which included Edgton) to Edmund Downynge and Peter Aysheton. In 1604 James I. granted it to Thomas Earl of Suffolk and Henry Howard, in whose family it remained until 1677, when it was conveyed to John Walcot. In 1725, Humphrey Walcot sold the chapel and titles of Edgton to Richard Fleming; and in 1790 Frances Harries widow, who was daughter and devisee of Edward Fleming, conveyed them to James Fleming Baxter. In 1812, the Rev. Humphrey Sandford purchased the advowson of Edgton, with the great and small tithes and glebe land; and the same now belongs to Humphrey Sandford, Esq., of the Isle. For centuries prior to 1812 Edgton and Sibdon Carwood seem to have been held together.

The Church of St. Michael consists of nave, chancel, south porch, and western belfry. and was rebuilt in the middle of the nineteenth century. It contains a monument to Mr. Matthew Sandford, who died 4 August, 1769. Martha, his wife, who died 30 March, 1764; Humphrey, their son.

who died 10 Sept., 1766; and Humphrey, Richard. and Edward. who died in infancy. In the chancel is a stone with this inscription:- " Here lye the bodies of Humphrey Sandford, late of Edgton, Esq., and of Elizabeth his wife. She dyed the 13th of Sept. 1727, aged 64. He dyed 9 June 1734, aged 76."

On 11 August, 1552, John Badeley, clerk, Thomas Bird and Lewis Taylor, churchwardens, and John Baugh and Thomas Bird, parishioners, made a return of the following goods and ornaments belonging to Edgton:- " Imprimis j challs of selvr, ij small bells, j sacren bell, j pere of vestments of saten abruggs, ij crosses of brasse, ij cruetts of pewtr, a senser of brasse, j lampe of brasse, ij altr. cloths, j hollywatr. pott of brasse. Item on surplese. j towell."

In 1418, William Kepeton was Chaplain of Edgton. In 1691, William Hay occurs as Curate of Edgton.

In Domesday Picot held Egedune. where were two hides and land for nine ploughs. In 1165 Henry fitz Hameline and Nicholas de St. Laurence were coparceners in Edgton. Henry fitz Hameline's moiety passed to a family who took the name of Egedon. In 1322 Richard, son of Philip de Egeton, granted his lands in the vill of Egeton to William, son of Thomas de Wynnesbury, in whose descendants they continued until 1489, when Margaret Sprencheaux, widow, daughter and heir of John Wynnysbury, granted all her lordships (including Edgton) to her four daughters and co-heirs, Margerie Lee, Mary Sprencheaux, Margaret Tyndale, and Sybil

Sandford. The Edgton property thus came to the Sandford family, with whom it has remained ever since, a period of 400 years. Humphrey Sandford, Esq., of The Isle, is the present Lord of the Manor of Edgton.

William Evans. of Edgton, by his will dated 7 August, 1837, left £300 towards the support of a schoolmaster or schoolmistress, and the residue of his property to erect a school-house or school-room. The present school was built in 1872 at the joint cost of the Earl of Powis and Humphrey Sandford, Esq.

The present transcript was made under the direction of a gentleman who has transcribed the registers of the Deanery of Clun, and has been carefully compared with the original registers by him and the proof- sheets have been passed through the press by the Rev. W.G.D. Fletcher, F.S.A. It is here printed by the kind permission of the Rev. Morgan Jones, the present Incumbent of Edgton
