Cardeston Registers.
Cardeston is a parish about 61 miles west from Shrewsbury, on the road from Shrewsbury to Welshpool, in the hundred of Ford, diocese of Hereford, archdeaconry of Ludlow, and rural deanery of Pontesbury. Its area is 2,400 acres, and the population in 1901 was 259. Since 1886, Cardeston has been united with Alberbury for civil purposes, by order of the Local Government Board, but the ecclesiastical parishes remain distinct.
At the Domesday Survey, Roger fitz Corbet held Cartistune of Earl Roger de Montgomery, and Gislebert held it under him. Gislebert's estate soon passed to the Corbets of Wattlesborough, and before 1255 Cardeston and Loton had been annexed to the fee of Wattlesborough, and became part of the great Barony of Cans. The estate descended from the Corbets to the Mawddwys, from them to the Burghs, and from them to the Leightons by the marriage of John Leighton, Sheriff of Salop in 1468, with Ankaret, second daughter and co-heiress of Sir John do Burgh. The Leightons have ever since been lords of the manor of Cardeston. Wattlesborough Castle, which was erected in Norman times, has been the residence of all these families until the year 1712, when Sir Edward Leighton moved his residence to Loton. His stepmother Jane, Lady Leighton, however, continued to live there until her death. It is now occupied as a farmhouse.
Cardeston Church, which existed at least as early as the 13th century, was perhaps originally a dependency of Alberbury Church. At a later date, in some unrecorded way, the Abbot and Convent of Wigmore held the advowson, and they presented the rectum from 1275 until the dissolution of that house, on the nomination of the lords of the fee - the Corbets of Wattlesborough, who were the real patrons. In 1526 they presented the nominee of John Leighton. In 1547 the King presented, on the nomination of Richard Leighton. In 1563, and ever since, the Leightons have presented to the rectory. The Abbot of Wigmore commuted his right of patronage for a pension of 8s., which is still represented by an annual sum of 8s. 10d., which is paid by the rectors of Cardeston, under the name of a Fee-farm Crown-rent. The value of the rectory in glebe and tithes was worth £3 6s. 8d. per annum, at the Valor of 1534-5. In 1341 Cardeston was assessed to the Ninth as a distinct parish; in 1547, it is called a rectory or free chapel; in 1563, it is styled "capella curata sive ecclesia parochialis"; and in 1570, a parish church. The present church of St. Michael was rebuilt in 1749, and consisted of nave and chancel, with a bell turret. On the west wall of the Church is a stone with this inscription: "Rebuilt with the assistance of generous Benefactors, 1749, John Gittins". The money was found through a Church rate. In 1844, the building was restored, the present octagonal embattled western tower was erected, and windows of the perpendicular type were inserted, at the cost of Sir Baldwin Leighton, 7th Bart., and Lady Leighton. £509 of this was given by Lady Leighton, as part of the proceeds of the sale of a print taken from an original miniature of the "Ladies of Llangollen". On the gallery wall, underneath the plaster, was this date:- "1678 R.T.". The length of the Church was 45 feet 3 inches, and its breadth 14 feet 4 inches; the length of the chancel being 13 feet 4 inches, and the breadth 11 feet 1 inch. In 1905 the Church,

which bad fallen into a bad state, was completely and judiciously restored. A new roof, oak screen, and pulpit were added, and a vestry and churchyard wall were built, and a stained glass window placed in the Church, at the cost of about £1,000. A 13th century round-headed window, which had been built up, was discovered in the south wall of the chancel, and opened out. The font, which is an octagonal structure with circular basin, dates from the 14th or 15th centary. The Communion Table is Jacobean; and a chest in the tower is dated 1703. The bell has the initials R.D.C.W., and date 1700. A large plate, or paten, has this extraordinary inscription:- "The gift of Eliz. Turner for the use of Carson Church for ever, 1733. Curse on them that use it for any other use". The donor was buried under the altar of the Church on 19 July, 1747. The present rectory was built 1830-40. The old rectory stood near the Church, and was converted into cottages.

The Parish Register Abstract of 1831 contains the following account of the Cardeston Registers:-
"Cardiston R. No. I. Bap., Bur., Mar., 1706-1740. No. II., Bap. 1741-1808, Bur. 1741-1747, Marr. 1741-1750. No. III., Bap.;1808-1812. No. IV., Marr. 1756-1812. Burials at Alberbury since 1747". This description of the Registers is correct.
There was an earlier Register, now lost, a few extracts from which have been preserved and are here given.
Vol. I. consists of 11 parchment leaves, size 15 by 8 inches, in a vellum cover, on which is inscribed "Cardeston Register, Number I". The entries are mostly in Latin until 1734, after that in English. It is beautifully written, until 1729 in the handwriting of the Rev. Samuel Smith, and is in excellent condition.
Vol. II. contains 29 parchment leaves, size 13 by 8 inches, in a vellum cover. The entries are in English, and the Register is well written and in good condition. Several blank leaves at the end of the book have been cut out. On the cover is inscribed "Cardeston Register, Number 2".
Vol. III. contains 5 parchment leaves, only two of which are used, in a vellum cover, size 7 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. Several blank leaves have been cut out at the end of the book. "Cardiston Register, Number III". is written on the cover.
Vol. IV. is a paper book of the usual printed marriage forms, three on each page, in a vellum cover. Only 51 entries have been filled up. The size of the book is 14 1/2 by 9 1/2 inches. "Marriage Register, Number I, Cardiston" is written on the cover.
Burials are entered in the Register only down to the year 1747, and it is said that these took place at Alberbury, and not at Cardeston. If so, they are not apparently entered in the Alberbury Registers, as are many other burials from Cardeston. The Leightons are the only family of any importance recorded in the Register. The children of Sir Edward Leighton, 1st Bart., were baptized at Cardeston, between 1678 and 1710. His first wife, Dorothy, was daughter of Sir Job Charlton, Bart., Speaker of the House of Commons.
vi. CARDESTON REGISTERS.
He married, aridly in 1693, Jane Nichol, to whom he devised Wattlesborough for life. His eldest son, the 2nd Baronet, then made Loton his residence, and built the North front. Since 1711 Alberbury has been the Parish Church of the head of the family. Baldwin Leighton, Esq., Captain in the 27th Regiment, the second son of the 2nd Baronet, by his wife Rachel Forester, lived at Carston Park, a square stone house still existing about a mile from the Church, and of which his father had given him a lease for life. He was father of the 6th Baronet, and died in 1791. In early maps a large enclosed park is shown. In 1617, Richard Baker, "de Carston parke", was buried at Alberbury.
